GREEN BAY, Wis. -
Lennart Kuester led the way with three individual victories over the weekend, but the IUPUI men's swimming and diving team dropped a pair of dual meets at both Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Wisconsin-Green Bay.
Friday night, the Jaguars dropped a 153-88 decision to Milwaukee, before falling 154-82 to Green Bay on Saturday. The losses dropped the Jags to 6-5 on the season in dual meets, and this weekend also marked the first time since October that the Jaguars competed on the road.
"I thought the team struggled a little bit this weekend. We are in very heavy training and the physical and mental tolls could be seen," assistant coach
Jake Tapp said. "Although nobody swam lifetime bests, we did have a bunch of guys that stood out and led the team through the weekend. We have lots to work on over this next month before conference, but the coaching staff and the team are more than ready to take on the challenge."
One of those guys that stood out this weekend was Kuester, who won the 100 free and 200 free on Friday against the Panthers, before winning his only individual race – the 100 free – on Saturday against the Phoenix. Friday night, Kuester started his weekend by eking out a five-hundredths of a second win in the 200 free by posting a time of 1:43.82. That was followed by a winning time of 47.32 in the 100 free, and that was bettered on Saturday when Kuester clocked in at 47.03 to earn a win against the Phoenix.
Adam Ferguson was the only other Jag to post a win on the weekend doing so in the 100 breast Friday evening against the Panthers, but Ferguson also managed to put up a second-place finish. Ferguson bested Milwaukee's David Chokran in the 100 breast with a time of 59.52 for his only win, and then clocked a time of 2:08.75 to touch the wall second in the 200 breast against Green Bay.
For the remainder of the weekend, IUPUI managed to get three more second-place showings, all of which came on Saturday.
Rich Sunkel claimed two of the three runner-up finishes in the 500 free (4:45.03) and the 200 free (1:43.76), while
Luke Haskett earned the final one in the 200 back at 1:58.19.
In diving action,
Cody Watts led the Jaguars on Friday posting a pair of second-place finishes in both the 1- and the 3-meter, while Josh Carmichael led the group on Saturday.
The Jaguars will have two weeks off before hosting former Summit League foe Oakland on Saturday, Feb. 1, in its final home meet before the 2014 Summit League Championships. The Feb. 1 meet against the Golden Grizzlies will also serve as Senior Day for the men's and women's teams.
