Taylor Heidorn Postgame
INDIANAPOLIS - Junior
Taylor Heidorn ripped a shot from just beyond the 18-yard box in the 23rd minute, netting her second goal of the year as the Jaguars knocked off Bowling Green, 1-0 at Michael A. Carroll Stadium on Sunday (Sept. 8).
Goalkeepers
Giselle Guzman and
Nicole Kulovitz both worked a scoreless half as the defense notched its second shutout of the season.
"We're solid in the back, no matter where we are though. Whether we're home or away, we're not easy to score on. That was proven in the game on Friday night," IUPUI Head Coach
Chris Johnson said. "We're not easy to put balls in the net on. If we put a ball in the opposing goal, we're going to be in good shape this year. There's not really any magic to it. The kids are working hard.
"We were able to get everyone in the game today, so it was kind of a full team effort."
The Jaguars dominated the run of play, outshooting BGSU (0-3) 21-5 overall and 11-2 on frame. However, IUPUI's (3-2-1) only offense came near the midpoint of the first half when Heidorn deposited her second game-winning goal of the season. Junior
Anna Rode started the play with a well placed corner kick into the Falcons' 18-yard box. Sophomore
Grace Perkowitz settled the pass and sent the ball back to Heidorn, who drilled a shot to the right of BGSU goalie Lauren Cadel for the game's only goal.
"Rode's corner was really good," Heidorn said. "We always try to get on the corners and that's something we struggled with in the past. Everybody was doing their part on that play and corner kicks are something we need to finish on, and we finally did."
The Jaguars had countless opportunities to add insurance in the second half, including back-to-back breakaway attempts for freshman
Tori Minnich with just more than 12 minutes in the match. The first time, Minnich took one too many touches, allowing Cadel to make a stop on a shot hit right at her. Less than a minute later, Minnich drilled a shot right into the stomach of Cadel, who finished with 10 saves for the Falcons.
In the 83rd minute, sophomore
Paxton Ott drilled a shot on frame that Cadel knocked down, but left sitting inside the six. However, Cadel was able to get on top of the ball before an IUPUI attacker could get to the rebound.
Minnich led all players with seven shots and Heidorn attempted four. Prior to her goal, Heidorn drilled a similar shot from the top of the 18 the Cadel tipped over the crossbar, ultimately leading to the decisive corner kick. Heidorn also nearly had an insurance goal late in the match when she and Cadel battled for a bouncing ball inside the BGSU 18. Rather than leave her feet, Heidorn held her ground, boxing Cadel out of the play. Once able to settle the ball, Heidorn rolled a shot into the empty net, but was called for a foul for tussling with the opposing goalkeeper.
BGSU's best look of the match was a shot from Sidney Huth in the 73rd minute that flew just over the crossbar and out of play. Both Guzman and Kulovitz needed just one save apiece in the shutout.
The win moved IUPUI's record to 3-0-1 at Carroll Stadium this season and 1-1 all-time against BGSU. The Jaguars have yielded only two goals at home this season and none in more than 220 minutes dating back to the Aug. 25 win over Indianapolis.
The Jaguars will continue the current seven-game homestand on Friday, Sept. 13 when they host Valparaiso at 7:00 p.m. at Carroll Stadium. That match can be viewed live through the
IUPUI LIVE! subscription service on IUPUIJags.com. In addition, admission is free and open to the public.
