EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The IUPUI women's soccer team misfired on a couple key scoring opportunities and ultimately came up on the wrong end of a 1-0 decision as Evansville's Lauren Tiernan netted the game's only goal in the 96th minute. Senior goalkeeper
Giselle Guzman withstood a relentless UE attack, facing 27 shots total and making nine stops in the loss.
"They're a good team and have good team speed," IUPUI Head Coach
Chris Johnson said. "Their center mids were good, fast players and did a good job of getting them forward. We did not have the better run of play tonight, that's for sure.
"Gigi played a heckuva game. She was lights out."
IUPUI (2-2-1) freshman
Catherine Raster got loose on a breakaway try, but was late in getting a shot off and had the opportunity stuffed. In the 72nd minute, freshman
Tori Minnich was able to edge past a defender and put a quality strike on goal, only to have UE goalie Simone Busby make the stop and leave the rebound sitting outside the six-yard box. However, IUPUI's other forwards were unable to get to the rebound before the Purple Aces cleared the ball away.
"We had two shots to win the game and just didn't capitalize," Johnson said. "Our other forwards need to be better about following the play when Tori has the ball at her feet. She's able to get off shots when you think she can't, and in this instance, we missed an opportunity."
Evansville (3-2) continually pounded on the Jaguars, eventually getting the IUPUI defense to buckle in the middle of the first overtime period. After the ball was played inside the Jaguars' 18, Tiernan was able to gather the ball at her feet and hit a strike just inside the left post past the sprawling Guzman.
Guzman had made highlight reel saves in each half, including a diving stop against UE's Bronwyn Boswell late in regulation.
"Gigi made saves when she had to make saves and that kept us in the game."
Stephanie Thompson led Evansville with six shots, equaling the total credited to the Jaguars' on Friday night. Sophomore
Kalli Shepler-Tucker was the only IUPUI player to have multiple shot attempts against the Aces.
"I thought Kalli had a nice game tonight. She was working hard and doing a good job of trying to make things happen," Johnson said. "We were very pleased with the overall effort all over the field."
The loss dropped the Jaguars to 0-2 on the road this season and 2-3 all-time against UE.
IUPUI will return home to host Bowling Green on Sunday (Sept. 8) at 1:00 p.m. at Michael A. Carroll Stadium. Free schedule magnets will be available to fans in attendance and admission is free of charge.
