Live Stats | Watch IUPUI vs. Morehead State (Sat., Sept. 7, 1:30 p.m.)
INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI volleyball team begins the second weekend of the season Sept. 6-7 when it heads to Morehead, Ky., for the Morehead State Invitational.
The Jaguars have already played three five-matches in the first week of the season, but unfortunately the Jags have come up short on all three occasions resulting in a 1-3 record entering the tournament.
"We've been in some close matches and we just haven't been able to get over the hump yet in those five-set matches," head coach Steve Payne said. "We need to capitalize on our opportunities going forward and I think our team is anxious to get back on the floor this weekend."
IUPUI opens this weekend's tournament against Montana State at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 6, before taking on tournament host Morehead State and Saint Louis at 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., respectively, on Saturday, Sept. 7. Saturday's 1:30 p.m. match against the Eagles can be viewed live on the OVC Digital Network for free.
Through the first week of the season, Moriah Fair is leading the Jaguars in kills averaging 4.22 kps, while Kaitlyn Hickey is not too far behind averaging 3.67 kps at the other antenna. Alexis Meeks is averaging 10.44 aps to rank third in the conference, and defensively, Beth Howard is second in the Summit League in digs per set (4.39 dps).
IUPUI's first opponent this weekend, Montana State, is an identical 1-3 following the opening weekend. The Bobcats are led offensively by Kennadie Clute's 4.31 kps, but MSU also has another player averaging over 4.00 kps in Loni Kreun (4.12 kps). One of the reasons for the Bobcats' early season struggles has been that opponents are hitting .272 against them in addition to their opponents outblocking them by nearly double.
Morehead State enters the weekend with a 2-2 record following a three-set sweep over Marshall on Wednesday. The Eagles boast a balanced offensive attack with four players averaging over 2.00 kps. Morehead State has already faced a common opponent with IUPUI in Butler, with MSU dropping a 3-1 decision to the Bulldogs last weekend at the UC Invitational.
Finally, the Billikens travel to Morehead, Ky., with a 1-2 record. Saint Louis fell victim to #10 Nebraska and Auburn in the opening weekend, but claimed a win in between those two losses against Louisiana-Monroe. Mallory Dillon is the squad's top hitter averaging 4.00 kps, but Megan Gilbert leads the team with a .357 hitting percentage.
