INDIANAPOLIS – Moriah Fair and Kaitlyn Hickey both recorded 20-plus kills, but it wasn't enough for the IUPUI volleyball team as Butler rallied to win sets four and five to defeat the Jaguars, 3-2, Tuesday evening at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
The loss was IUPUI's (1-3) third five-set loss on the young season, while the Bulldogs remained perfect at 4-0.
After combining for just 15 attack errors in the first three sets, the Jags struggled offensively in the final two sets registering 17 errors while Butler made just six during that span proving to be the difference.
Butler took the early advantage by winning the first set, 25-21, despite IUPUI hitting .310, but the Jags were able to bounce back and win a tightly contested second set. Thanks to a pair of Butler service errors and solo blocks from Hickey and Fair, the Jags were able to jump in front, 9-6, in set two. With the lead still at three, 13-10, the Jaguars used three blocks and four Bulldogs attack errors to open a 21-12 advantage while forcing Butler to burn both of its timeouts.
Despite the cushion, the Bulldogs mounted a fierce rally and eventually had two opportunities at set point, but Fair squandered both of those set points to keep the Jaguars alive. Tied at 28, kills by Fair and Logan Walling clinched a 30-28 second-set win for the Jags, tying the match at one set apiece heading into the 10-minute break.
Out of the intermission, neither team could create any breathing room. The set featured 19 ties and neither team could earn a lead of more than two points until a late push by IUPUI proved to be the difference. With the score knotted at 22, kills by Hickey and Alexis Meeks gave the Jaguars two set-points, and after one was spoiled, a bad set during the next point gave the Jags a 25-23 third-set triumph.
Multiple kills by Kelly Wachtel, Fair and Hickey carried the Jags to a 19-16 lead in set four, but just when it looked like IUPUI was in control, the Bulldogs seized seven of the next eight points to catapult in front, 23-20. A pair of kills from Fair, a Butler error, and a Meeks kill gave the Jaguars match point, 24-23, but two Kelly Kyle kills combined with a Bulldogs block gave them a 26-24 fourth-set win and sent the match to the fifth and final set.
Unfortunately for the Jags, Butler took five of the first six points in the fifth set and put IUPUI in a hole that it could not get out of. The Jags were able to close within three, 8-5, but three straight Butler blocks later in the set finished off a 15-9 Butler victory.
Fair finished with a match-high 23 kills and added 18 digs, while Hickey added 21 kills and 16 digs for the Jags. Wachtel put down a career-high 14 kills and hit at a .387 clip on the night, while Beth Howard led the IUPUI defense with 25 digs.
IUPUI returns to action Sept. 6-7 when it heads to Morehead, Ky., to play in the Morehead State Tournament. In addition to the Jags, the tournament field includes Montana State, Morehead State and Saint Louis.
