INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's soccer team was on the defensive for most of the day and the visiting Butler Bulldogs finally broke a scoreless tie in the 79th minute on a Sophia Maccagnone penalty kick goal. Butler outshot the Jaguars 24-4 overall and held the Jaguars without an attempt on goal.

Sunday's loss was IUPUI's (3-3-3) first of the year on its home turf.

"This is a good team we played today," Head Coach Chris Johnson said. "They throw numbers forward in the attack. It's a very unconventional system they play, which makes it a little difficult to adjust to. The girls didn't break.

"We didn't give up a lot of dangerous situations - a lot of their shots were from outside the 18. On crosses, Gigi came out and picked up. I thought that our gameplan was working."

Butler (7-1-2) was on the attack seemingly all day, led by Maccagnone and Elise Kotsakis. However, IUPUI senior goalkeeper Giselle Guzman and her group of backs were equal to the task. Butler outshot the Jaguars 10-0 before halftime, however none of the Bulldog attempts were particularly dangerous.

IUPUI slowly began to gain steam in the attack at the start of the second half with freshmen Catherine Raster and Tori Minnich working up top.

As the game opened up, each offense began to find more creases with which to work. Guzman went to the ground to stonewall Mary Allen in the 61st minute after a pass was slotted in behind the IUPUI backs. At the other end, IUPUI had its best attack of the day result in a Raster header that flew well left and high of target.

The Jaguars were dealt another blow in the 69th minute when redshirt freshman Samantha Bathurst was issued a straight red card while trying to defend a breakaway opportunity. Seconds later, Kotsakis had a drive hit the bottom side of the crossbar and bound back onto the field of play. The ball stayed almost exclusively in IUPUI territory the rest of the day.

"When you go a man down, it further complicates things," Johnson said. "It definitely limited our ability to have numbers up the field. We made the adjustment, but we kind of had to sit in and absorb and try to pick your chances.

"Once we won the ball, we struggled to connect passes and get out of the back."

Butler eventually got its goal in the 79th minute when an IUPUI defender was called for a foul in amongst a scrum inside the 18-yard box. Guzman guessed right on Maccagnone's penalty kick, but was unable to keep the ball out of the net.

For Maccagnone, it was her sixth goal of the season and her first game-winner. She finished the match with nine shots and Kotsakis had seven attempts.

Guzman made eight saves while BU's Julie Burton didn't need a save in the shutout victory.

"They play with five backs and they play a very low pressure system," Johnson said of the Butler defense. "They just want to connect the ball around the back and have you chase it around and look for openings after you create openings for them."

Bathurst and sophomore Paxton Ott both earned their first career starts on Sunday as Sarah Carlisle and Kalli Shepler-Tucker were given some additional rest following's Friday's match with Ball State.

IUPUI fell to 3-8-1 all-time against Butler and had its three-game winning streak against the Bulldogs snapped in the process.

The Jaguars will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 29 when IUPUI hosts Northern Iowa at Carroll Stadium at 1:00 p.m..That match will be the fifth of the current seven-game homestand.
