TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Three different players reached double figures in kills led by Moriah Fair's 16 helping the IUPUI volleyball team defeat Indiana State, 3-1 (25-13, 25-21, 20-25, 25-16), Tuesday evening.

The win evened the Jaguars overall record at 4-4 and continued the team's momentum following last weekend's tournament title at the Comfort Inn and Suites Invitational. With the loss, the Sycamores dropped to 4-3.

"It was great to get another road win, especially against an in-state opponent," head coach Steve Payne said. "We played an almost flawless set one and four with only one hitting error in each of those sets. When we put everything together, we can be a tough team to beat."

The IUPUI offense was clicking from the get-go as it managed to hit .371 in the opening set en route to claiming the easy 25-13 win. The Jags took control in the opening set thanks to a nine-point run featuring two kills apiece from Fair, Kelly Wachtel and Logan Walling to open a 10-2 advantage. Three consecutive kills from Fair later in the set widened the Jaguars lead to double figures, 18-8, and down the stretch two kills from Kaitlyn Hickey and a kill from Alexis Meeks finished off the 12-point first-set win.

The Jaguars offensive efficiency didn't take much of a hit in set two, but the set was much tighter due to offensive improvement on the other end of the net. Neither team could expand its lead to more than two points for a majority of the set until back-to-back kills from Kortni Wright and Walling pushed the Jags in front, 21-18. Indiana State closed within a point at 22-21, but a trio of kills from Meeks, Walling and Wachtel – in that order – closed out a 25-21 second-set win, sending IUPUI in the 10-minute break with a two sets to none cushion.

Sloppy play characterized the first 10 points of set three as both teams combined for eight errors, but most of those came on the Sycamores side of the net resulting in the Jags taking a 7-3 lead. Following a timeout, Indiana State retaliated by capturing nine of the next 10 points to catapult in front, 12-8. IUPUI slowly crept back in the set and inched within three points four times, but the Jaguars could never get over the hump as the Sycamores extended the match with a 25-20 third-set win.

Despite the third-set setback, IUPUI returned to its first-set form in set four. Kills from Fair, Wachtel and Hickey got things going early, before a pair of aces served up by Meredith Farkas allowed the Jaguars to double up Indiana State, 8-4. Seven of IUPUI's next 12 points came from kills as the lead grew to 20-9, and from that point, Wachtel, Hickey and Fair all registered kills helping IUPUI finish off the 25-16 win in set four.

Fair's 16 kills led all players and she also added 16 digs for her sixth kill-dig double-double of the season. Hickey also posted a kill-dig double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs, while Wachtel tacked on 12 kills thanks to a .385 hitting percentage on the night.

Defensively, Kortni Wright collected seven block assists to lead all players, and when she wasn't being credited for a block, Beth Howard was busy in the back row recording a team-high 20 digs.

The Jags are back in action this weekend when they head to Columbus, Ohio, for the Sports Imports DC Koehl Classic hosted by Ohio State. IUPUI opens tournament action against the 13th-ranked Buckeyes on Friday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m., before finishing the tournament against Xavier and Southeast Missouri State on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., respectively.
