EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - SIU Edwardsville midfielder Cassidy Sherman scored a pair of early second half goals and the hosts enjoyed an 18-4 shot advantage as the Jaguars fell on the road, 2-0 on Friday (Aug. 30) night. Sherman scored the game-winner in the 49th minute and added insurance in the 51st minute of the SIUE victory.
"They're a high energy team and they're an aggressive team," IUPUI Head Coach
Chris Johnson said. "We just didn't bring it. We didn't match their intensity. We didn't bring it like we're capable of. They kept winning 50-50's in the middle of the field and did a good job of uglying up the game and winning scrums and imposing their will on us.
"Hopefully it's a lesson learned. We've got a little regrouping to do and hopefully we'll learn from this."
IUPUI (1-1-1) got precious few shot attempts over the course of the evening, putting just two shots on frame against the SIUE (2-1) defense. Freshman
Tori Minnich had a shot stopped by SIUE goalie Jennifer Pelley in the 12th minute and the Jaguars' only other first half try was a shot by
Paxton Ott in the 43rd minute.
Despite being outplayed in the first half, the Jaguars went to the locker room tied at 0-0.
"I thought we dodged a bullet (in the first half)," Johnson said. "I really thought after that that we'd come out with a little more energy in the second half. It just didn't happen."
Senior goalkeeper
Giselle Guzman kept the hosts at bay until Sherman broke through early in the second half. Sherman drilled a shot from the right side of the box to the far post, thanks to assists from Samantha Jones and Chelsea Smith. Moments later, Sherman flicked a header past Guzman, set up by Michelle Auer's restart after a Jaguar foul. The damage seemingly could have been worse as the Cougars had shots hit off the crossbar in both the 64th and 71st minutes.
Sophomore
Sierra Bryant was the Jaguars' top attacker in the second half, having a shot go wide in the 74th minute and a shot stopped by Pelley in the 75th minute.
Sherman was one of three SIUE players with three shots while Bryant led IUPUI with two attempts. SIUE forward Kayla Delgado, who scored all four goals in the Cougars' 4-1 win over Drake last weekend, was held without a shot attempt on Friday night. Johnson credited freshman
Maddie Riedford for her defensive work on Delgado.
"Maddie shut her down," Johnson said. "(Delgado)'s tough. She's a really good player, but we had Maddie follow her everywhere. That was really one of the few bright spots.
"
Sarah Carlisle worked hard and did some good stuff and I thought Kalli (Shepler-Tucker) ran around and did some nice things tonight, but she wasn't really all that dangerous."
Guzman made five saves in the loss while Pelley made two saves in earning her first shutout of the season.
The Jaguars will continue the two-game weekend on its home turf on Sunday (Sept. 1) when they welcome Grand Canyon University to Michael A. Carroll Stadium for a noon kick. Like always, home soccer matches at Carroll Stadium are free of charge this season, while
standard university parking rates do apply.
