EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - After an undefeated weekend on the home pitch, the IUPUI women's soccer team will hit the road for the first time when the Jaguars head to SIU Edwardsville on Friday (Aug. 30) night. The Jaguars will take on the Cougars at 8:00 p.m. Eastern at Korte Stadium before then heading home to host Grand Canyon at Carroll Stadium at noon on Sunday (Sept. 1). IUPUI has never played either SIUE or Grand Canyon in women's soccer heading into this weekend.
Like always, admission to IUPUI home soccer matches is free of charge but fans are
subject to university parking rates.
"We're excited about starting the season off on a very positive note this year," IUPUI Head Coach
Chris Johnson said. "We'll have a little bit more challenging week ahead of us."
Johnson's squad opened the year with a 1-1 double overtime tie against Green Bay on Friday (Aug. 23) before knocking off the University of Indianapolis, 2-1 on Sunday (Aug. 25). Freshman
Tori Minnich scored the equalizer on Friday and later earned a pair of penalty kick opportunities in the UIndy match. Senior
Kristin Pierce netted the game's first goal in the win over the Greyhounds before
Taylor Heidorn netted the game-winner early in the second half.
"I think that we've continued to grow each game and practice last night went pretty good. We've got some things set for the next couple nights that we think will help us out this weekend, so we're looking forward to keeping the momentum going," Johnson said. "One thing we need to do is we need to be more efficient with our offensive opportunities. We had 29 shots against UIndy and we just put a couple balls in the net. We've got to create a few more shots on goal out of the shots we're getting and we've got to be able to be more efficient with those shots we get on goal."
The Jags 29 shots were five off a school record on Sunday and came from 13 different sources. Minnich and Heidorn led IUPUI with five shots each.
Defensively, senior goalkeeper
Giselle Guzman had a 0.58 goals against average and made 12 saves last week and freshman
Nicole Kulovitz made four second half saves against UIndy on Sunday.
"Defensively, we had a couple breakdowns. We'd like to start putting some shutouts on the board," Johnson said. "We're working on a few things there in terms of recovery runs and making sure our kids are getting back to help the keepers a little more."
SIUE (1-1) lost at Kansas City in the its season opener before rebounding for a 4-1 win at Drake. Kayla Delgado scored all four SIUE goals with assists coming from three different teammates. Goalkeeper Jennifer Pelley allowed just two goals in net for the Cougars in 180 minutes work.
Grand Canyon (0-1), which joined the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) prior to this season, lost its season opener 3-0 at St. Mary's last Friday night. St. Mary's outshot Grand Canyon 20-5 overall and 6-3 on goal. The Antelopes will play at Valparaiso on Friday night before trekking south to Indianapolis for Sunday's match.
