INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI men's swimming and diving team competed in front of the home fans for the first time this season and captured nine wins leading to a 150-67 win over Valparaiso Friday evening at the IUPUI Natatorium.
"We were able to get some people in their third events, which we don't get to do that often, and we also got some people in some off events," head coach
Matt Bos said. "It is evident we have not raced much, so we need to bring a whole different focus tomorrow against a really good Wright State team."
After opening the meet with a solid win in the 200 medley relay,
Daniel Saunders captured the first individual win of the day taking 10:06.28 to win the 1,000 freestyle.
The 200 free followed and
Tony Carroll clocked the best time at 1:42.24, followed by
Rich Sunkel at 1:44.21. Carroll's time equaled the eight-best time in program history.
Freshman
Matt Stowe followed Saunders and Carroll by claiming his first career win in the 100 back, managing to complete the four-lengths in 54.47.
Kevin Lunte gave IUPUI back-to-back 1-2 finishes adding a second-place time of 55.87.
A.J. Bernth earned the first of his Top 2 finishes with a second-place showing in the 200 fly at 2:01.20, but later in the meet he led a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 fly by sprinting to a winning time of 54.50 in the 100 fly.
Adam Ferguson swept the sprint free events winning the 50 free (21.80) and the 100 free (48.07), before the final two wins of the day came from
Alexander Rhoda and Sunkel, who were victors in the 200 back (2:02.48) and the 500 free (4:47.89), respectively.
All four men's divers -
Alex Olson,
Cody Watts,
Isaac Stapleton and Joshua Carmichael - saw action for the first time with Watts posting the top score in the 1-meter dive (294.75) and Olson posting the top score of 280.72 in the 3-meter dive.
IUPUI has a quick turnaround as it returns to action at Noon tomorrow (Nov. 9) against Wright State.
