INDIANAPOLIS – Despite winning its second consecutive Summit League regular-season title last week, the focus for the IUPUI volleyball team has shifted towards the Summit League Tournament, which begins on Friday, Nov. 22 and goes through Sunday, Nov. 24.
IUPUI won't have to travel far for this year's tournament as the Jaguars will serve as the host by virtue of winning last year's regular-season title.
By winning this year's regular-season crown, IUPUI claimed the top overall seed in this year's tournament and earned a first-round bye. The Jaguars begin tournament action on Saturday, Nov. 23, at 7 p.m., against the IPFW Mastodons, who defeated North Dakota State, 3-0, in its opening match of the tournament. The early match on Saturday will feature the No. 2 seed Denver Pioneers and No. 3 seed South Dakota.
"We're really excited to get the tournament started and we know that whoever we play on Saturday will be a tough opponent," head coach Steve Payne said. "It will definitely be nice to play this tournament in our gym for the first time."
The Jaguars enter the tournament as winners of 11 of their past 12 league contests, but their lone loss came at the hands of in-state rival IPFW back on Nov. 9.
In regular-season action, IUPUI finished in the Top-3 in seven statistical categories, including ranking first in service aces and digs. The Jags had five players named All-Summit League performers at last night's banquet, with
Alexis Meeks,
Beth Howard,
Moriah Fair and
Kaitlyn Hickey being named to the all-league team and
Logan Walling earning Summit League All-Freshmen Team honors.
Meeks and Howard were also named the Summit League Setter of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, respectively, while Payne was named Summit League Coach of the Year for the second straight year.
