MACOMB, Ill. - The IUPUI men's soccer team came in better rested, but host Western Illinois was more desperate and on Saturday (Nov. 2), desperation won out. The host Leathernecks hung a five-spot on the Jaguars, scoring four times in the second half of a 5-0 win.

With the win, WIU (5-10, 3-2 Summit) clinched a spot in the upcoming four-team Summit League Tournament, while the Jaguars (2-11-4, 2-2-1) slid to the No. 4 spot in the league standings.

Western got goals from five different players, including the game-winner from Drew Edmond in the game's 41st minute. After leading 1-0 at the half, WIU opened up the attack in the second half.

Drew Whalen scored in the 50th minute and Mario Alvarez tallied on a header in the 78th minute. The Leathernecks poured it on late, getting a Tyler Chavez score in the 85th minute and a Zachary Walsh penalty kick in the 87th minute.

Sophomore goalie Eduardo Cortes was forced to weather the offensive storm, collecting 10 saves and yielding all five goals. WIU outshot the Jaguars 22-6 overall and 15-2 on goal.

IUPUI's best scoring chance of the day came in the 17th minute when Clint Hoffar had a header go just over the crossbar after an Evan Smith corner kick. Freshman Cole Walker and Smith were credited with the Jaguars' only two shots on frame.

WIU goalie Yves Dietrich made two saves to collect the shutout.

IUPUI will cap the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 9 when the Jaguars host Oral Roberts at 7:00 p.m. at Carroll Stadium in Summit League action. That night is Club Soccer Night at Carroll Stadium as the Jaguars hope to have 1,000 or more fans in attendance for the 2013 home finale.
