CHARLESTON, Ill. – Five consecutive wins in the final five events pushed the IUPUI men's swimming and diving team to two wins over Eastern Illinois and Illinois-Chicago Saturday afternoon at Ray Padovan Pool on the campus of Eastern Illinois.
Tony Carroll led the way with two individual wins as the Jags picked up a 151.0 to 53.0 win over the Panthers and a 121.0 to 83.0 triumph over UIC.
"This was a great way to start off the season," head coach
Matt Bos said. "We're going to enjoy these wins and we look forward to getting back to work on Monday."
The meet got off to a strong start when the 200 medley relay quartet of Carroll,
Landon Mintch,
Adam Ferguson and
Joshua Garmon combined to win the event in a time of 1:35.56. Considering it was the first time the foursome had swam together in competition, they were just .69 seconds off the IUPUI school record.
Carroll and
Rich Sunkel followed that event by going 1-2 in the 200 free, respectively, with Carroll winning the event in 1:43.35 and Sunkel closely behind at 1:43.84.
Three second-place finishes ensued, including Ferguson and
Lennart Kuester tying for second in the 50 free at 21.92, but
Daniel Heringer's second-place time of 51.39 in the 100 fly quickly cemented him in the fourth spot in the school record books.
From that point the Jags dominated winning the final four individual events before capping the meet with a win in the 400 freestyle relay. Kuester started the string of wins by winning the 100 free in 47.22, which was followed by Carroll's second win of the day in the 100 back. Carroll clocked in at 52.04, the fifth-best time in IUPUI history.
The final two wins came from Sunkel in the 500 free (4:44.33) and Ferguson in the 100 breast (59.32).
After a week off, IUPUI will return to action Nov. 8-9 when it hosts Valparaiso (Nov. 8) and Wright State (Nov. 9) at the IUPUI Natatorium.
