PEORIA, Ill. - The IUPUI men's and women's cross country teams will have their final tune-ups as the Jaguars will compete in the 10th annual Bradley "Pink" Classic on Friday (Oct. 18) at Newman Golf Course.
The event will begin with the men's 8K college division/open race at 4:00 p.m. Eastern, followed by the women's 6K college division/open race at 4:40 p.m.. The men's 8K championship race is slated for 5:25 p.m. and women's 6K is marked for 6:05 p.m.. The men's championship race is expected to include nearly 300 participants from 22 schools and the women's race is earmarked for 24 teams and approximately 350 runners.
All participants will wear special pink bib numbers on the front of their jerseys and will have the option of wearing blank pink bib sheets on their backs, on which runners can write names of individuals who have been impacted by breast cancer.
The women's team will be running its second 6K of the season and its first since the Sept. 7 IPFW Invitational. In that meet, senior
Rachel Zajac took the individual tape in a time of 22:26.33 and sophomore
Leah Brooks ran a time of 22:44.46.
Both
Jordan Hanaway and
Julie Riggins also earned top five finishes and fifth-year senior
Allie DeBaker was 11th at 23:47.30.
Two weeks ago at the Notre Dame Invite, Zajac turned in a 5K school record time of 17:57.2 and Hanaway was the Jaguars' No. 2 runner at 18:49.7. This is the second straight year the Jaguars have run in Bradley's event after placing 13th of 23 teams a year ago. Brooks was IUPUI's No. 2 runner last season with a time of 22:21 and classmate
Lexi Hunt was the Jaguars' fourth finisher in a time of 22:43.
Riggins ran 22:45 at this meet last season and
Amy Mattingly spun a time of 23:27.
On the men's side, IUPUI is coming off a fifth-place finish at the Notre Dame Invitational two weeks ago, despite a fifth-place performance from sophomore
Joey Zielinski. Zielinski finished that meet in a time of 25:40.7 running in his hometown.
Classmate
Miguel Lozano notched a time of 26:16.7 and
Sam Roudebush clocked a time of 26:29.5. Junior
Pryce Ragains turned in a time of 26:33.2 and freshman
Peyton Reed finished at 26:38.0.
That meet's JV/Open race showcased the Jaguars' emerging depth as redshirt freshman
Max Zmija placed 21st with a personal record time of 26:38.8 and sophomore
Ryan Cutter ran a time of 26:41.8 in his 2013 cross country debut.
The other Reed brother, Xavier, finished at 26:55.8 in his best outing of the season. This year marks IUPUI's first-time running the Bradley Invitational since Head Coach
Chuck Koeppen took over the program. IUPUI last ran at Bradley in 2008, placing second of four teams.
IUPUI checks in at No. 14 in the most recent Regional rankings and will run against at least four other teams that have been ranked at some point this season.
