INDIANAPOLIS - Despite another strong defensive effort, the IUPUI women's soccer team came up one goal short as the Jaguars fell to Kansas City 1-0 at Michael A. Carroll Stadium on a picturesque Sunday (Sept. 30) afternoon in Indianapolis. UMKC's Hunter Wagoner netted the game-winner in the 74th minute off an assist from Catherine Hawn for the day's only offense.

IUPUI slid to 2-10-1 overall and 0-1-1 in Summit League play while UMKC improved to 4-6-3 and 1-1 in league play.

"We've just got to find a way to score goals in games. We can't go two games in a row playing 200 minutes without putting the ball in the back of the net," IUPUI head coach Chris Johnson said. "I thought our kids were definitely affected by the 110 minute game on Friday night. But, credit to (UMKC), they kept being physical out there with us, but we still have to find ways to score goals."

IUPUI struggled to find opportunities as the Kangaroos outshot the Jaguars, 16-6. The Jags' best scoring chance of the first half came when sophomore Taylor Heidorn hit a nice volley on frame from 16 yards out, but right at UMKC goalie Megan Goetzinger. Despite the large shot discrepancy, UMKC was limited to just two first half shots on goal, both of which Giselle Guzman handled without incident.

In the 54th minute, freshman Sierra Bryant got a clean look on goal, but had her strike fly just high of the crossbar.

UMKC finally broke through with just more than 15 minutes to play, beginning with Hawn picking off an IUPUI pass near midfield. From there, Hawn played the ball to Wagoner, who negotiated up the right side before angling a shot past Guzman for the game's lone goal. Guzman got a hand on the shot, but was unable to punch it wide of net, breaking her streak of nearly 230 scoreless minutes in net.

IUPUI made a late push in the closing minutes after a foul gave Kristin Pierce a free kick from 40 yards out. Pierce drove the ball towards the back post where junior Ashley Doreski was stationed, but her wrong-footed attempt from a tough angle sailed high of target.

Guzman's play and the continued development of the back line has made the Jaguars much more stout defensively in the past month.

"I think that (Kristin) Pierce, Lauren (Kulaga) and Kelli (Parks) are doing a good job of being on the same page back there," Johnson said. "They're doing a good job of being physical and still challenging for the ball and trying to move the ball out of the back and help get us going forward."

On Sunday, Kansas City used 17 fouls and a pair of yellow cards to wear down and beat down the Jaguars. That, coupled with the double overtime affair on Friday made for a deeper bench and some heavy legs on Sunday.

In all, 18 different Jaguars earned minutes with Kelli Parks and Lauren Kulaga being the only two field players to play all 90.

IUPUI will continue the three-game Summit League homestand next Saturday (Oct. 6) when the Jaguars host Western Illinois at Michael A. Carroll Stadium at 4:00 p.m.. That game can be watched online, including via via iPhone or iPad, as part of the IUPUI LIVE! subscription service as Scott McCauley (pxp) and former Jag Yogi Snider (analyst) describe the action.
