INDIANAPOLIS - The IU Indianapolis women's soccer team got a dose of feel good to close out the non-conference slate on Sunday (Sept. 14) as the Jaguars played Toledo to a 1-1 draw at the on-campus Michael A. Carroll Stadium. The Jags conceded an early tally, but rebounded with a
Maci Sammons score just before halftime in getting a much needed result. Senior
Emma Frey and redshirt sophomore
Lilly Ma collected assists on the play and graduate transfer
Sarah Bambrick made four saves in goal.
The game was virtually even in all aspects as Toledo (3-1-2) finished with a 14-13 shot advantage and the two sides split possession nearly dead even.
"Let's just say we were able to fight back. (We) gave up a goal with just a little miscommunication there in the first half. And our defenders were like, 'are you serious?' They stepped it up," head coach Angela Berry White said. "We battled back to tie it up there. And then we just kept creating opportunities for ourselves. So proud of the way that we battled back. You know, it's a 1-1 draw, but we know that we left some goals out there, but hey, hats off to their keeper who made some incredible saves on us today."
Toledo jumped in front in the eighth minute when Morgan Spitler got in behind the Jaguars defense and then eluded Bambrick before rolling a shot into an open net for her fourth tally of the year. Emma Rhoades played Spitler into space for the assist.
IU Indy (1-6-1) drew even just before halftime when Sammons headed a shot just over Toledo goalkeeper Agnes Stenlund for her first career score. Frey recycled the attack from the left side, sending the ball out wide right to Ma. Ma centered a pass to Sammons, who did the work from there for an equalizer.
"It's just all the movement from the tops and then just moving the ball around and out to the wides," Sammons said of her score. "It was just a team effort. It was super cool to see how that all ended up with a ball in that back of the net."
The Jaguars had chances in the second half with
Caroline Kelley spearheading the attack in the early going. Later, Frey hit a post from distance in the 82nd minute on a go-ahead attempt.
Kelley had a team-high three shots while
Hannah Roberson and Sammons had two each. Toledo goalkeeper Agnes Stenlund finished with two saves while Kaema Amachree paced the Rockets with four shot attempts. The draw moved the all-time series with Toledo to 1-2-2 while the Jaguars remained unbeaten at home against the Rockets, going 1-0-2 in those three matchups.
The Jaguars will now turn attention to the Horizon League slate, beginning with a home match against a tough Northern Kentucky squad on Sunday (Sept. 21) at noon.
"You know, we just got to keep believing in ourselves. We keep getting better. We keep getting better and better each game," Sammons said.
Sunday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+ as Rick Johnston (pxp) calls the action.
