INDIANAPOLIS - Xavier's Mariah Whitaker had a goal an assist and Catherine Allon netted the game-winner in the 37th minute as the visiting Musketeers captured a 3-0 win over the Jaguars in a rain soaked Sunday (Sept. 2) afternoon contest at Michael A. Carroll Stadium. The match was stopped with 4:44 left in regulation due to inclement weather.
Both sides struggled to negotiate the conditions in the early going until Xavier (2-3) started to take control of possession midway through the first half. Late in the first stanza, it was Allon who struck paydirt against IUPUI (1-4) reserve goalkeeper
Kristin Haseley less than nine minutes before halftime. Margaret Woods lofted a cross through the IUPUI penalty area from the right side, where a first XU player swung and missed from point blank range. However, Allon was able to get a clean touch on the ball near the far post and easily drilled a shot past Haseley for the game's first goal.
Just more than two minutes later, XU's Taylor Dearbaugh made it a 2-0 score, thanks to a Whitaker assist. Whitaker played a long lead pass to Dearbaugh, who had snuck in behind the Jaguars' back line. From there, she made a textbook finish past Haseley for a quick 2-0 advantage.
With the wind at their back, the Jaguars dominated the run of play to start the second half including getting four corner kicks in the opening six minutes. Out of those chances,
Kristin Pierce had the only IUPUI shot attempt, which was blocked near the six-yard mark and deflected wide left of the goal.
Once XU finally got the ball on their end of the field, Whitaker made the most of a rare second half scoring chance. After earlier missing a shot attempt wide right, this time Whitaker made a long carry through the middle of the Jaguars' defense before slotting a shot from just inside the top of the 18 for her second score of the year.
IUPUI continued to press numbers forward and got a pair of quality attempts from freshman
Sierra Bryant, but the second resulted in a smooth diving save by Xavier goalkeeper Katie Markesbery.
The Jaguars' final scoring chance of the day came in the 85th minute when sophomore
Taylor Heidorn hit a brilliant shot from distance, but the ball flew harmlessly just over the crossbar. Less than two minutes later, the match was stopped due to lightning in the area. From there, the two head coaches agreed to stop the match.
Xavier outshot the Jaguars 15-9 and 7-3 on target. Markesbery, who was set to be lifted at the time of the stoppage, earned the shutout with three saves in 85-plus minutes. Haseley made four saves in relief of
Giselle Guzman, who came off the field just more than 10 minutes into the match.
IUPUI finished with a season-high 11 corner kicks, falling two shy of tying the school record set against Valparaiso in 1999. Whitaker, who played at nearby Cathedral High School, led Xavier with four shots while Bryant attempted three for the Jaguars.
The Jaguars will return to action on Friday, Sept. 7 when they head north to Ypsilanti, Mich. to take on Eastern Michigan. That match is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. EDT.
