DETROIT - As well as parts of IUPUI's defense played on Sunday (Sept. 16), the women's soccer team's offensive struggles continued as the Jaguars managed just four shot attempts in a 2-0 loss at Detroit. The host Titans scored in the middle of each half as the Jaguars dropped their fifth consecutive decision.
"
Lauren Kulaga stepped up and played a great game against their No. 24 player and got her frustrated to where she didn't do anything," head coach
Chris Johnson said. "
Grace Perkowitz also played really well and I thought, for the most part, our back line held together pretty well.
Kristin Pierce played another good game along the back line and Gigi played well in goal.
"They scored one from distance and the other was a PK and that was that. She stopped a couple breakaways and all in all, had a good game. We didn't lose this game because of goalkeeping play."
Detroit (3-4-1) went in front in the 27th minute on Haley Burtraw's third goal of the year, when she blazed a shot from just inside the 18 to the top left corner of the net. Junior goalkeeper
Giselle Guzman reacted to her right, but was unable to keep the ball out of the net.
IUPUI's lone shot on goal came just over three minutes later when freshman
Sierra Bryant tested UD goalkeeper Nora Abolins.
IUPUI (1-9) stayed within striking distance until the 63rd minute when a
Kelli Parks foul led to a Detroit penalty kick. Rebekah Dornbos took advantage of the PK, drilling a shot past a diving Guzman for her second score of the year.
Detroit continued to keep the Jaguars' offense at bay, yielding just two total corner kicks and two shot attempts in each half. Junior
Sarah Carlisle led the Jaguars with two tries while Bryant and
Ashley Doreski added one each.
"We have not worked that much on organizing in the final third of the field," Johnson said. "Today, we weren't switching the ball around like we were on Friday. We were getting down the field, but we haven't worked on attacking in a 3-5-2 that much. We were able to get the ball in the final third, but we struggled to get the ball to people where they could be dangerous with it."
Guzman made six stops in goal while Abolins needed just one save for her third shutout in 2012.
IUPUI will cap the non-conference portion of the schedule on Thursday (Sept. 21) when the Jaguars head 40 miles east of the city to Greencastle, Ind. to take on DePauw University.
