INDIANAPOLIS - Junior forward Ashley Doreski netted her her second goal of the 2012 season in the 64th minute, but the IUPUI women's soccer team was unable to fully overcome a two goal deficit as the Jaguars dropped a 2-1 decision to Indiana State at Michael A. Carroll Stadium on Friday (Sept. 14) night. The visiting Sycamores scored twice in the first half and outshot the Jaguars 20-10 in the win.

"The thing we're a little frustrated with as a coaching staff is, the intensity level of that second half was a lot higher than it was in the first half," head coach Chris Johnson said. "We've got to come out and be more intense when the score is 0-0, rather than wait until we're down a goal or two before we decide to turn it on."

Junior Kristin Haseley made four second half saves in relief of classmate Giselle Guzman, who made six first half stops.

Indiana State (4-4-1) went in front in the game's 16th minute on Elle Steele's first goal of the season. Shelby Troyer played the ball towards the top of the 18 where the ball, Steele and Guzman converged at the same time in a hard collision. Steele won the battle and the war, getting enough of a header on the ball to see it trickle over the endline while Guzman was shaken up on the play.

The Sycamores put a capper on the half in the 44th minute when Sydney Lovelace tapped a toe poke past a challenging Guzman, thanks to an assist from Molly McKee. After being outshot 13-3 in the first half, Johnson opted to make a couple of changes including switching to a 3-5-2 formation and putting Haseley in net.

Seemingly energized by the moves, IUPUI (1-8) came out on the offensive from the opening whistle of the second half. The Jaguars finally found paydirt in the 64th minute as Doreski put away her team-high second score of the year off an assist from freshman Kalli Shepler-Tucker. Shepler-Tucker rolled a ball through the teeth of the ISU defense before it came to an unmarked Doreski on the far side of the field. Doreski cut the ball back towards the middle and blasted a shot past Erin Mitchell to cut the Sycamores lead in half.

The Jaguars had a multitude of chances to pull even later in the match, but ultimately was unable to solve Mitchell on a second occasion. In the 70th minute, junior Mackenzie Calvert nearly knotted the score, thanks to a brilliant restart from Kristin Pierce. After a yellow card on Troyer deep in ISU territory, Pierce bent a ball into the middle of the penalty box, but Calvert's well struck header flew just high of the crossbar.

Pierce and Calvert both almost tied the game again in the 79th minute as well. Pierce had a right-footed corner kick glance off the bottom side of the crossbar and back onto the field of play. After ISU was unable to clear the ball, Calvert had a clean opportunity in close but had to rush the attempt and fired high of frame.

The Jaguars would only get one shot attempt the rest of the night, coming from freshman Sierra Bryant with just under three minutes to play.

"I really liked our passing tonight. I thought we passed the ball better tonight than we had all year long," Johnson said. "But it's got to start resulting in some better opportunities inside their 18. We still didn't get a lot of opportunities inside their 18."

"Coach switched us to a 3-5-2 and we were really able to exploit out wide and able to find Carlisle and Doreski on some quick restarts and that helped us go forward a lot," Haseley said. "I think offensively, that was one of the better halves we played this year."

Lovelace led all players with eight shots, putting four strikes on target. Calvert came off the bench to lead the Jags with three attempts while sophomore Taylor Heidorn had two shots. Mitchell needed just one save to earn her fourth win of the season.

The Jaguars will cap the weekend schedule on Sunday when they head north to take on Detroit at 3:00 p.m.. Live stats will be available shortly after kickoff.
