INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's soccer team will host Indiana State at Michael A. Carroll Stadium on Friday (Sept. 14) night before then trekking north to take on Detroit on Sunday at 3:00 p.m.. Friday's match will kickoff at 7:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
Head coach Chris Johnson's squad held a 1-0 lead for a good chunk of last Sunday's match with Wright State, but yielded four goals in less than five minutes midway through the second half in a 4-1 loss to the Raiders. Freshman Grace Perkowitz scored her first collegiate goal in the loss while junior Kristin Pierce took over the team lead with her third point of the year. Despite the outcome, junior goalkeeper Giselle Guzman had a marvelous game in net, making a career-high 14 saves. Wright State's three final goals came on rebounds after Guzman had made initial stops.
Guzman has a team-best 2.66 goals against average and has made 45 saves in her seven appearances.
Indiana State (3-4-1) is winless in their last three matches after opening the year at 3-2. On Wednesday, the Sycamores lost a 3-1 count at Indiana after having played Sacramento State to a scoreless draw on Sunday. Marisa Windisch leads ISU with two goals and two assists and Shelby Troyer also has two goals on the season. Erin Mitchell has played every minute in net, amassing a 1.22 goals against average and 35 saves in eight starts.
IUPUI is 4-7-1 all-time against Indiana State, having lost the last two meetings in the series. ISU won 2-1 in Terre Haute last season and IUPUI's last win in the series was a 3-0 count on the road.
Detroit (2-4-1) hasn't played since a pair of overtime matches in Waipahu, Hawai'i left them with a tie and a loss. The Titans dropped a 2-1 outcome to Hawai'i the day after playing Ball State to a 1-1 draw on the island. Detroit's two wins have both come via shutout this year and came against Canisius and Marygrove. Kaitlyn Quarrell leads the squad with three goals and two assists and three others UD players have two goals each. Nora Abolins has started six of the team's games in goal, posting a 0.80 goals against average and an .844 save percentage.
IUPUI is 3-5-2 all-time against, but hasn't beaten the Titans since 2009. The Jags won 2-1 in overtime that year, but has dropped back-to-back meetings since then.
