DAYTON, Ohio - Fresh off Sunday's 1-0 win over Northern Kentucky, the IUPUI men's soccer team seeks to keep the positive momentum rolling on Tuesday when the Jaguars head east to play at Wright State (1-4) at 7:00 p.m.. Tuesday's match can be watched for free on the Horizon League Network via the above link.
IUPUI (2-4) took an early lead against NKU on Sunday, thanks to the first collegiate goal from freshman
Michael Sass, and held on to the shutout to snap a four-game skid. Seniors
Sean McGrath and
Kyle Hyland assisted on Sass' goal, as the 6-foot-7 rookie climbed over a defender to head a shot just inside the right post in the game's 15th minute.
Hyland continues to lead The Summit in goals (4) and points (9) while freshman goalkeeper
Eduardo Cortes has emerged as one of the top netminders in the league. The Texas-native has a league-high 35 saves and 1.40 goals against average in five starts, including two shutouts. Just three weeks into the season, he's been picked the league's Defensive Player of the Week twice.
Offensively, both Sass and McGrath are tied for second in the league with two assists each through six games and collectively IUPUI ranks second in the league in goals (7) and assists (8).
Wright State has dropped two straight heading into Tuesday's contest after having defeated Davidson by a 3-1 score at the Wolstein Classic in Columbus, Ohio. Derek Zuniga is the Raiders top attacker with a goal and two assists on the year, including the game-winner against Davidson. Jacob Bye is WSU's primary goalie, having collected a 1.20 goals against average and 26 saves in five starts.
IUPUI is just 3-11 all-time against Wright State and has never beaten the Raiders in Dayton in six tries. The Jaguars defeated WSU 2-1 in Indianapolis on Oct. 26, 2010 before dropping a 1-0 count at Kuntz Stadium a year ago.
