INDIANAPOLIS – In its first action of the 2012 season, the IUPUI volleyball team came away with a 2-1 record at the Thunder Invite and looks to improve upon that performance when it opens its 2012 home schedule on Tuesday, Aug. 28, against Indiana State. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. inside The Jungle.
Tuesday’s match kicks off a week-long homestand for IUPUI that will also feature home matches against North Texas, Georgia State and Ball State as part of the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational (Aug. 31-Sept. 1), in addition to a meeting at home against Butler on Sept. 4.
“We had a good opening weekend where we are able to learn some things about our team and hopefully those positives will continue Tuesday and throughout the next week,” said head coach
Steve Payne. “Indiana State is a good team and we’re looking forward to having a good crowd come out and help us pick up a win.”
At the Thunder Invite,
Moriah Fair and newcomer
Kaitlyn Hickey led the team offensively, but the defensive performances of
Beth Howard and
Bethany Fogler stood out and led to the duo being named to the all-tournament team.
Howard began the tournament with a 14-dig effort in her first match as the team’s libero, before coming through with a career-high 35 digs in a five-set loss to Marshall and 22 digs in a three-set win over Wright State. The sophomore averaged 5.92 digs per set for the weekend.
At the net, Fogler picked up right where she left off a year ago. Last season, the 6-3 middle hitter set every IUPUI single-season blocking record and started the 2012 campaign by averaging 1.00 bps throughout the weekend.
Indiana State is coming off a 1-2 weekend falling to Eastern Illinois and DePaul, while picking up a win over Butler. Shea Doran led the Sycamores offensively racking up 50 kills in 14 sets worth of action.
Tuesday’s match can be watched via
