INDIANAPOLIS - Coming off Friday's 2-0 win over Detroit, the IUPUI men's soccer team looks to continue its winning ways on Tuesday (Aug. 28) when the Jaguars take on crosstown rival Butler at the Butler Bowl. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on the city's near Northside.
IUPUI (1-0) got a pair of goals from senior
Kyle Hyland and a shutout from freshman goalkeeper
Eduardo Cortes to claim the program's fourth consecutive win in a season opener. Hyland, who entered play with just two career goals, netted the game-winner in the 57th minute and added insurance in the 87th minute, thanks to an assist from junior
Ian Block.
Defensively, Cortes needed six stops to keep a clean sheet in his collegiate debut.
Butler (0-0-2) earned ties with William & Mary and Bucknell at this weekend's VCU Tournament after also playing Oakland to a 2-2 tie in the preseason. After a scoreless draw with William & Mary, the Bulldogs tied Bucknell 1-1 with Jeff Adkins accounting for the team's lone goal. Jon Dawson has started both matches in goal for BU, making seven saves in 220 minutes on the young season.
IUPUI knocked off the Bulldogs 3-0 at Kuntz Stadium a year ago, thanks to a two-goal effort from Block and some late insurance from
Perez Agaba. The Jaguars trail the all-time series 2-9-2 (2-7-2 in the Division I era), but haven't lost to the Bulldogs since 2009. The Jaguars are 0-4-2 in the six road matches against the Bulldogs in the Division I era and 0-1-1 at the Butler Bowl.
Head coach
Isang Jacob had four freshmen and seven total newcomers in the starting lineup on Friday night. Of the three players that came off the bench, two were also rookies.
