5/3/2012 3:58:00 PM

INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI Athletics Department and Athletics Director Michael Moore announced three promotions for members of the administrative staff, effective immediately. Gail Barksdale has been promoted to Senior Associate Director of Athletics, Ed Holdaway has been named Assistant AD for Communications and Kyle Torgerson has been elevated to Assistant AD for Sports Medicine.

“These changes accurately reflect the duties and responsibilities within the athletics administration,” Moore said. “Ed, Kyle and Gail have brought dedication and professionalism to Jaguars Athletics that enables us to meet our mission to recruit, retain and graduate champions.”
Gail Barksdale

Barksdale joined the IUPUI staff in July 2011, after having served in a similar capacity at Georgia State University. She currently oversees the men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country and men’s and women’s track & field programs and will be assuming similar duties with the softball program beginning next fall.

In addition, she’s the administrator for the IUPUI strength and conditioning program and is responsible for the departmental grant-in-aids and execution of the student-athlete special assistance fund.

“I’d like to thank Mike and the others involved for the promotion. I’m certainly humbled and grateful for the opportunity presented to me,” Barksdale said. “I’m excited for the expanded responsibilities in terms of sport responsibility and continuing to contribute to our departmental success.”
Ed Holdaway

Holdaway (BAJ, ’01) joined the IUPUI Sports Information Office in July 2001 and later took over as SID in July 2005. He currently serves as the primary contact for nine of the department’s 16 sports, while also serving as administrator for the men’s and women’s tennis programs. Since 2001, Holdaway has overseen three major redesigns of IUPUIJags.com and facilitated media deals with WebStream Productions, HomeTown Sports and most recently with WNDE 1260 AM. He also spearheaded marketing campaigns for the 2003 Men’s Basketball team, former head coach Ron Hunter’s Samaritan’s Feet initiative and George Hill’s selection in the 2008 NBA Draft.

Within the city, he’s been on the local organizing committees for various NCAA regional and championship events while having also worked for the IHSAA and Indianapolis Indians in different capacities.

“I take great pride in what we’ve continued to build at IUPUI and I’ve had the opportunity to work with some of the greatest staff and student-athletes in all of college athletics,” Holdaway said. “I’m extremely grateful for this opportunity and look forward to continuing to work hard to grow and elevate IUPUI Athletics.”

Kyle Torgerson
Torgerson joined the IUPUI Athletics Department in August 2005 and has served as the program’s lead athletic trainer the past five years. He’s responsible for the day-to-day operations of the ATR while providing coverage to the men’s soccer, tennis and golf programs. He spearheaded the renovation of the new athletic training room, quadrupling the existing square footage and providing office space to three full-time athletic trainers. Under Torgerson’s direction, the staff has expanded to include two graduate-assistants to increase coverage for all 16 varsity sports.

On campus, Torgerson has served on the IUPUI Staff Council, which was established to connect different sectors of campus and to facilitate cross promotion of campus wide events. During his tenure on Staff Council, he was the chair of the Rewards and Recognitions Committee.

“I am honored and thankful to get this promotion,” Torgerson said. “The athletic training and sports medicine departments are continuously evolving to better serve the health and welfare of our student-athletes and I look forward to continuing to lead those efforts.”
