CHICAGO – Following a three-set win on Saturday at Western Illinois, the IUPUI volleyball made it a perfect weekend after defeating Chicago State, 3-0 (25-13, 25-9, 25-12), Sunday afternoon in Chicago.

The win moved IUPUI to 13-7 overall, while the Cougars fell to 2-18.

The Jags did not have a player reach double-figures in kills, but IUPUI hit .365 collectively, while holding Chicago State to -.019 proving to be the difference in the contest. The win moved IUPUI to 16-1 all-time against the Cougars.

“We did a really good job taking care of the ball and put away the ball when we had opportunities to do so,” head coach Steve Payne said. “It’s always good to come away with two wins on a road trip.”

Kills from six different Jaguars combined with two aces and three Chicago State errors allowed IUPUI to take an 11-7 lead in the opening set. With the lead trimmed to three at 13-10, four consecutive Cougars errors widened the Jags advantage to seven, 17-10, before a CSU kill broke the run. Following the kill, IUPUI went back on the offensive and used kills by Kelsey Hoefer and Lindsey Weber, and another Chicago State attack error to up its lead to nine, 20-11, forcing the Cougars to burn their second timeout of the set. From that point, IUPUI cruised to a 25-13 opening-set victory.

The Jags hit .556 in the opening stanza and registered 14 digs compared to just four for CSU.

In set two, IUPUI seized control early, taking 13 of the first 14 points, and never looked back. The run to start the set featured pair of kills from Alexis Meeks, three kills from Fair, and a handful of CSU errors. With an 11-point lead at 20-9, kills from Meredith Farkas and Kortni Wright, a block from Farkas and Wright, and two Cougars errors closed out an impressive 25-9 second-set win for the Jags.

Set three was more of the same for IUPUI as a slew of CSU errors helped the Jags jump in front, 11-4. Leading 18-10, three Cougars miscues coupled with a pair of Hoefer kills put the Jags at match point, 24-10. After two match points were spoiled, a Chicago State service error finished off a 25-12 set-three win for the Jags.

Hoefer led IUPUI with a match-high tying seven kills, while Beth Howard added a match-best 13 digs. Meeks was the lone player to register a double-double with 16 assists and 11 digs.

IUPUI closes out its five-match road trip next weekend when it heads to Vermillion, S.D., and Kansas City, Mo. for match-ups against South Dakota and Kansas City on Friday, Oct. 12 and Sunday, Oct. 14, respectively.
