KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Kansas City sophomore Jordan Rideout scored a pair of goals including the game-winner in the 109th minute as the host Kangaroos picked off the Jaguars, 2-1 in a double overtime thriller on Saturday (Oct. 27) night.
The win sent UMKC (7-8-2, 5-1 Summit) to the top of The Summit League standings while IUPUI (6-9-2, 3-3) continues to cling to the No. 3 spot with nine points in league play.
IUPUI junior
Ian Block forced overtime with his third goal of the season with just 3:50 left in regulation. Senior
Adam Mills maneuvered his way up the right sideline and ultimately to the endline before sending a cross back into danger.
Block was positioned perfected and redirected a header just beyond UMKC goalkeeper Connor Sparrow to spoil the shutout bid.
UMKC threatened to win the match late in regulation, scoring the game's first goal in the 83rd minute to break the shutout. Jeffrey Stezovsky played a long ball forward to Rideout, who shifted a header past IUPUI goalie
Jess Clark, who was making his collegiate debut.
Rather than conceding the match, the Jaguars immediately got down to business with Mills connecting with Block for the equalizer. Mills, who entered the match after the Jags yielded the goal, was IUPUI's top offensive weapon working on the right flank.
After IUPUI drew even, UMKC almost won the match in regulation on a second brilliant header by Rideout. The UMKC attacker had Clark beaten on the play, but had his shot rip off the crossbar and back onto the field of play.
IUPUI's best scoring chance in overtime came at the very end of the first stanza. Mills earned a corner kick in the closing seconds and the official opted to stop the clock with seven ticks left, allowing the Jaguars to get organized. Senior
Kyle Hyland bent a nice ball towards the back post where 6-foot-7 freshman
Michael Sass put a quality header on it. However, Sparrow engulfed the attempt to send the match to a second overtime period.
IUPUI controlled possession for much of the second overtime period, but ultimately it was Rideout and the 'Roos that escaped victorious. On a counterattack, UMKC played the ball in to Zach Balthazar in behind the Jaguars' defensive line. The retreating Jaguars' backs caught up to the speedy UMKC attacker, knocking him off the ball. However, the ball popped free to Rideout just inside the 18, where he was able to slide a shot just inside the right post for the game-winner.
UMKC outshot IUPUI 12-10 and 5-4 on frame, led by Rideout's four attempts. Hyland and senior
Joshio Sandoval led IUPUI with two shots each.
Both Sparrow and Clark made three saves each in goal.
IUPUI will cap the regular season at Fort Wayne next Saturday, Nov. 3 when they take on the Mastodons at 6:00 p.m..
