INDIANAPOLIS – Away from competition for more than a month, the IUPUI men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams returned to competitive action Friday evening at the IU Natatorium with the women’s team posting wins over Xavier, Western Illinois and Saint Louis, while the men’s team picked up a win over Western Illinois and a pair of losses to the Musketeers and Billikens.

“Overall, it was nice to get back at it and compete with the Summit League meet being so close. We had a couple big wins from the women as Xavier and Saint Louis are quality programs and to come away with victories is very encouraging,” said head coach Matt Bos. “The men had some great swims from Adam Ferguson and Tony Carroll to name a few. I thought we were a bit rusty but we fought hard against some quality opponents.”

The women’s team opened the scoring by finishing second in 400 medley relay (4:01.98), before Margaret Barber picked up the first individual win of the evening.

Barber shattered the IUPUI school record in the 1000 freestyle timing in at 10:30.82, besting the previous record of 10:46.14 set by Sara Smith on Nov. 10, 2006.

“That was just a great swim for her as we really haven’t swam her much in that event this year. But she had a solid swim from start to finish and breaking that school record the way she did was nice to see,” Bos said.

Later in the meet, Barber went tacked on a second-place showing in the 500 freestyle with a mark of 5:11.88, good for fifth in program history.

Peyton Zehner came up with a seasonal-best performance in the 200 freestyle racing to a second-place time of 1:57.56. The time was good enough for eighth in school history and she later placed second again, this time in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.80.

Jennifer Oleksiak gave the Jaguars another victory winning the 200 breaststroke at 2:27.23, the third-best time on the IUPUI charts, while picking up another Top-3 finish in the 200 IM with a third-place time of 2:12.67.

Alexus Laird and Lindsey Hurst gave the Jags valuable points placing second and third, respectively, in the 50 freestyle at 24.75 and 25.38, before Laird won IUPUI’s third individual event of the meet in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:08.58, the fourth-fastest time in program history.

The final two IUPUI women’s victories came courtesy of Chen Ni, who won the one- and three-meter dives with marks of 300.76 and 307.87, respectively. Ni’s one-meter total was the second-highest score of her career in the event.

The men’s team got out to a fourth-place showing in the 400 medley relay, but Tony Carroll broke onto the 100 backstroke Top 10 with his 52.92 opening split, the fifth-fastest time in school history.

Carroll added a pair of third-place times in the 200 IM (1:58.99) and the 200 back (1:57.29), with his 200 IM mark tying a personal-best and the 10th-best mark in IUPUI history.

Adam Ferguson swam a PR in the 200 breast at 2:09.54, 0.8 seconds better than his previous best of 2:10.34 set on Dec. 2, and John Van Dyke put together an impressive outing in the 200 fly racing to a third-place time of 1:58.24.

Finally in diving, Mitchell Gauger moved into the IUPUI Top 10 for the first time with a score of 311.25 in the 1-meter dive, good enough for ninth on the IUPUI charts and second in the meet.

“I think we’re in a great spot right now and we are getting healthy,” Bos said. “We’ve been training well and I’m excited to get a few more meets under our belt.  Overall I’m really pleased with the direction we are heading.”

IUPUI has a quick turnaround and is back in action tomorrow (Jan. 21) at Eastern Illinois. The meet is scheduled to start at Noon ET.
