KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Senior Megan Hock netted her school record tying 31st career goal to stake IUPUI to an early 1-0 lead, but the Jaguars squandered the advantage in dropping a 2-1 overtime decision at UMKC in both team's Summit League opener on Friday night.

"At some point we've got to step up and win a game," IUPUI Head Coach Chris Johnson said. "We've got to win a game. We've got to stop waiting for someone to do it for us and we've got to take charge. That's all there is to it.

"We missed three breakaways, two in the second half when the game was 1-1."

Hock tallied her team-high fifth goal of the season in the 11th minute thanks to an assist from classmate Alicia Brock on the play. IUPUI (1-7-3, 0-1 Summit) nearly took a 2-0 advantage in the 25th minute, but freshman Taylor Heidorn had her strike hit off the post, rather than find the back of the net.

UMKC (3-5-3, 1-0 Summit) tied the game in the 58th minute on Zaina Mayer's penalty kick goal, which was whistled after Kristin Pierce and Chelsi McHenry got tangled with a UMKC attacker. Still, the Jags kept attacking as Heidorn had two quality chances late, including one that resulted in a Jami Finnell save and an IUPUI corner kick. Sophomore Sarah Colby also had an attempt go high of the crossbar in the 77th minute.

The hosts wasted little time in tallying the game-winner once the game went to extra time as UMKC's Cecilee Burdge scored in the 94th minute after an errant pass deep in IUPUI territory.

"So far, it doesn't matter who we've put in there. We've gone through eight or nine defenders in there," Johnson said.

Finnell made six saves in the win for the 'Roos while sophomore Kristin Haseley finished with three stops for the Jags. Heidorn led all players with a season-high five attempts as IUPUI outshot UMKC 13-9.

For Hock, Friday's goal was the latest in a long resume of accomplishments. The Greenwood-native upped her school record total of game-winners to 15 earlier this season and is now tied with IUPUI Hall of Famer Karrie Reising with 31 career goals. Hock is just two points shy of matching Reising's 73 career points, trailing her by two assists overall.

Friday's loss was IUPUI's 13th in its past 14 true road games. The Jags were 1-8 on the road last season and have begun the 2011 campaign at 0-5.

The Jaguars will cap the two-game trip on Sunday when they take on Summit League newcomer University of South Dakota at 1:00 p.m. in Vermillion, S.D..
