VALPARAISO, Ind. - The IUPUI women's soccer team got goals from
Megan Hock and
Taylor Heidorn, but was unable to hold a pair of leads as the Jaguars earned a 2-2 tie with Air Force in the opening match of the Crusader Classic at Brown Field on Friday night.
"Ninety-eight percent of the game was played wonderfully on our part. Our kids did a fantastic job," IUPUI Head Coach
Chris Johnson said. "Then there were two plays where we absolutely shot ourselves in the foot and it killed us."
IUPUI (1-5-3) took a 1-0 lead late in the first half when Hock scored her 30th career goal off the first career point from classmate
Karin Demo. Demo, from nearby Hobart, rolled a cross through the top of the 18-yard box to Hock, who struck for the game's first goal in the 39th minute. The tally leaves Hock one goal shy of tying IUPUI Hall of Famer
Karrie Reising for the school record in that category.
The lead stood until the 53rd minute when Bridgett Murphy tied the score on her second goal of the year, beating
Kristin Haseley with a shot attempt after a turnover.
IUPUI regained the lead in the 73rd minute when Heidorn blasted a shot from the top of the box past Air Force (4-5-1) goalie Hannah Schwartz, set up by an assist from
Sarah Colby. Foe Heidorn, it was her third goal of the year while Colby pulled into a tie for the team-lead with her second assist.
However, the lead lasted less than a minute as an errant IUPUI clearance led to Stephanie Patterson getting a shot past reserve goalkeeper
Giselle Guzman in the 74th minute.
The Jaguars outshot Air Force 15-13, but ware marred by some unfortunate breaks throughout. Heidorn had a header earmarked for a score early in the first half, but had it cleared off the line by a Falcon defender. Early in the second half, the Jags had a flurry where
Sarah Carlisle had a shot hit off the crossbar, followed by Heidorn hitting a post. IUPUI outshot Air Force 3-0 in overtime and played the final 10 minutes with a man advantage after Tory Gullo was sent off with a red card.
Senior
Alicia Brock led IUPUI with four shots and Heidorn, Carlisle and
Sarah Wong tried three each. Murphy led Air Force with seven shots and Patterson had three attempts off the bench.
Guzman matched her season-high with four saves in relief of Haseley.
Friday's game was the first-ever meeting between IUPUI and Air Force on the pitch.
IUPUI will cap play at the Crusader Classic on Sunday when it faces off with Campbell at noon at Eastgate Field at noon. That match marks the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
