INDIANAPOLIS - If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. The old adage played true on Sunday afternoon as the IUPUI women's soccer team escaped victorious with a 2-1 double overtime win over Eastern Michigan at Kuntz Stadium.
Senior
Megan Hock tallied her 15th career game-winning goal in the 106th minute, thanks to an assist from junior
Kelli Parks to spark the team's first celebration of the year. It was Hock's 28th career score, pulling her within three of tying Hall of Famer Karrie Reising for the IUPUI career record in that category.
After being neutralized for much of the day, Hock had three quality chances in the second overtime period, the third of which found the back of the net. Early in the second overtime, sophomore
Ashley Doreski played a gorgeous ball into Hock, but the goalkeeper beat the speedy IUPUI forward to the punch and denied the opportunity. Moments later, Hock had an attempt from distance flare just wide of the right post. She finally netted the winner when she flicked Parks' driven corner kick past EMU goalkeeper Maggie Manville and into the top left corner of the net.
"Normally on that play, the ball is supposed to drop right where the keeper is. That's why we surrounded her," Hock said. "It was perfect placement for Kelli and I was just there to finish it off."
"Megan Hock never quits working out there," IUPUI Head Coach
Chris Johnson said. "She just continues to work hard and makes every run that needs to be made."
After IUPUI (1-3) yielded an Angela Vultaggio goal in the 38th minute, Doreski knotted the score in the 49th minute. Sophomore
Kristin Pierce swung the ball out wide to the left-footed Doreski, who cut the ball back inside before rolling an attempt to the far post from 15 yards out. It was Doreski's second career goal and a welcome sight for an offense otherwise seeking results. Johnson shuffled bodies at the forward positions throughout the game, playing at least nine different players up top.
"We're looking for a spark," Johnson said. "We were looking for someone to pick us up to where we want to go to be successful. Some people were a little tired today because they played a lot of minutes on Friday."
Eastern Michigan (0-2-1) outshot the Jaguars 25-15 overall and 12-7 on frame. However, sophomore goalkeeper
Kristin Haseley was equal to the task, making a career-high 11 stops in her first full game of the season. She and classmate
Giselle Guzman had split the first three outings prior to Sunday's contest.
"(Haseley) stepped up huge for us today," senior captain
Margaret Allgeier said. "I've never heard her talk so much. She demanded the box, she demanded everyone around her."
EMU goalkeeper Maggie Manville wasn't tested quite as frequently, making four saves in the defeat.
Stephanie Clark and Chelsea Detrick led EMU with five shots apiece while Hock led all players with six tries. Four other Jaguars had two attempts, including Doreski putting both of her's on frame. The sophomore nearly put the Jags in front in regulation, but had a header attempt cleared off the line by an EMU defender.
The win snapped the Jaguars' three-game slide to open the season and six-game skid dating back to last season. Sunday's match also marked the second of four straight consecutive home games. Like always, one of the Jaguars' goals is to successfully protect its home turf.
"Winning at home is huge because on the road you never know what to expect," Allgeier said. "You never know what's going to happen. At Kuntz, we know what to expect and we know it's our field and we want to defend it."
IUPUI's next match will be on Friday, Sept. 2 when the Jaguars host Eastern Illinois at 7:00 p.m. at Kuntz. Like always, IUPUI students are admitted for free with a valid JagTag and adult admission is just $5. Children ages 5-12 are just $2 and those 4-and-under are admitted for free.
