INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's soccer team yielded five goals in the opening 42 minutes including a pair to Detroit forward Kaitlyn Quarrell as the Titans coasted to a 5-1 win over the Jaguars at Kuntz Stadium on Friday night. Senior
Megan Hock provided one of the lone IUPUI highlights as she netted her 27th career goal early in the second half to account for the Jaguars' offense.
Detroit (2-1) came out with an all out offensive blitz, netting the game's first goal less than 10 minutes in. After IUPUI was unable to clear a ball out its own zone, Alyssa Korson capitalized by flaring a shot over sophomore goalkeeper
Giselle Guzman for her first goal of the season. Less than four minutes later, Detroit went ahead 2-0 when Sarah Dzuris scored from the far post set up by Rebekah Dornbos' driven corner kick.
The Titans continued to control the action as Quarrell scored her first goal in the game's 24th minute. Nina Carter put an initial strike on frame that Guzman knocked down, but was unable to recover before Quarrell's rebound attempt. Carter later scored one of her own in the 34th minute before Quarrell made it 5-0 in the 41st minute.
The Jaguars (0-3) showed some mettle by forcing the pace early in the second half. Senior
Karin Demo had two quality chances in the opening five minutes of the second stanza, the second of which glanced off the crossbar before sailing high. Hock finally put the Jaguars on the board by finishing a scrum play inside the Titans' six-yard box. Sophomore
Sarah Colby poked the ball towards the goal before Hock took the final touch just inside the left post for her first tally of the year.
"At halftime, we talked about winning the game one half at a time. In the second half, we came out and won the half and outshot them by a lot," IUPUI Head Coach
Chris Johnson said. "Right now, we just don't have the belief in each other that we need. I thought the first seven minutes of the game were pretty good.
"We made a few changes in the second half personnel wise.
Karin Demo came in and gave us a lift off the bench and I thought
Anna Rode did a great job for us at outside back back there."
IUPUI outshot Detroit 8-4 in the second half and 4-0 on goal. After a shaky first half, the Jaguars defense notched its first scoreless half of the year after the break. Sophomore
Kristin Haseley pitched a second half shutout without a save while Guzman made two first half stops.
"Coach has never been one to be mad really. He just told us we needed to step it up. I think us seniors as a whole were not happy when we got in there," Demo said of Johnson's halftime speech. "He's a very good motivational speaker."
Quarrell led all players with five shots while Hock, Demo and freshman
Taylor Heidorn attempted two each for the Jaguars.
"I've always been more of an offensive player so when I get opportunities like that, I love it," Demo said of her two attempts. "Hitting the crossbar is not fun, but at least I got an opportunity."
IUPUI will continue its four-game homestand on Sunday when it hosts Eastern Michigan at 1:00 p.m.. That game can be viewed online as part of the
IUPUI LIVE! subscription service on IUPUIJags.com. Pregame coverage will begin at approximately 12:50 p.m. as Greg Rakestraw calls the action from Kuntz Stadium.
