INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI head women’s basketball coach Austin Parkinson completed his coaching staff today announcing the hiring of former Notre Dame standout point guard Ashley Barlow as an assistant coach.

“I’m just excited for this opportunity to work with Coach Parkinson here at IUPUI,” Barlow said. “I’ve always wanted to be a coach, and at Notre Dame I spoke with Coach McGraw about pursuing coaching and she always thought I had the potential to be a good coach. I’m looking forward to getting my feet in the door and starting my coaching career in my hometown.”

“It is an exciting day for IUPUI basketball as we welcome Ashley Barlow to our coaching staff,” Parkinson said. “Having played point guard for one of the top programs in the country, Ashley has always been an extension of the coach on the floor and will now get to use that knowledge on the sidelines.”

Barlow completed a historical career for the Fighting Irish in 2010, which saw her emerge as one of the most versatile players in Notre Dame women's basketball history. She is the only Fighting Irish basketball player, male or female, to eclipse 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 250 assists and 250 steals in a career, while also becoming one of only three players in program history to register at least 60 steals in four consecutive seasons (Coquese Washington and Niele Ivey).

Upon graduation, Barlow found her name etched among the Top 10 on 12 of Notre Dame's career statistical charts.
In addition to serving as a two-time captain, Barlow was a three-time all-BIG EAST Conference selection and a 2010 Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA)/State Farm All-Region I honoree during her senior season.

The Indianapolis native graduated from Notre Dame in 2010 earning degrees in marketing-entrepreneurship and sociology. This past year, she played professionally in Israel for Elitzur Rishon Le-Zion averaging 20.2 points per game, 6.1 rebounds per game, 3.5 assists per game, and 2.4 steals per game. Her scoring average and steals per game average ranked second and sixth in the league, respectively.

Prior to starring at Notre Dame, Barlow suited up at Pike High School where she was a WBCA High School All-American and a two-time all-state selection. She holds 12 school records at Pike High School, including marks for points in game (42), season (653) and career (1,726), as well as career scoring average.

“Ashley is so well respected here in the Midwest, and specifically Indianapolis, because she not only had an excellent basketball career, but she conducts herself with the utmost class off the court as well,” Parkinson added. “I think she will be a tremendous resource for the ladies in our program and I am glad she is on board.”

Barlow is the second member of her family to step into The Jungle joining her brother, David, who served as an all-conference point guard from 2003-07.

The hiring of Barlow wraps up a summer in which Parkinson constructed a coaching staff featuring the likes of associate head coach Alex Webster and assistant coach Stan Benge.
