INDIANAPOLIS - Former IUPUI baseball player Brent Burns was killed and three members of his family were injured Friday night in a traffic accident in Georgia. The Indianapolis-native was a two-year letterwinner for the Jaguars' baseball team before its discontinuation in 2001.
The 5-foot-10 infielder earned a spot on the squad through a walk-on tryout in the Fall 1999 and later emerged as IUPUI's starting second baseman midway through his freshman campaign. He made his collegiate debut in a 13-7 win over Wofford on Mar. 15, 2001, going 1-for-4 with a run scored. A week later, he posted another freshman highlight, going 2-for-2 at the dish against perennial powerhouse Oral Roberts.
Known as Burnsy by his teammates, the diminutive Lawrence North-product wore the No. 1 jersey during his two years with the program and was known as a consummate team player.
He earned his degree in Business Management from the Kelley School of Business in 2004.
Burns is survived by his wife, Melissa, and two young sons, Dylan (5) and Colton (2).
