TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – In its final meet before hosting the 2011 Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships Feb. 16-19 at the IU Natatorium, the IUPUI men’s and women’s swimming and diving team each posted a pair of wins over Rose-Hulman and Butler Saturday afternoon.
In the 26 combined events, IUPUI combined for wins in 22 of the events with
Katelyn Cato,
Lindsey Hurst,
Carrie Ford,
Chen Ni,
Michael Steurer,
Tyler McGowan, and
Mitchell Gauger claiming multiple victories.
On the women’s side, Cato broke into the Top 15 in the IUPUI record books in both of her victories. In the 1000 freestyle, Cato touched the wall in 10:59.26, the fifth-fastest time in school history. She followed that performance with a time of 1:00.53 in the 100 backstroke, the 11th-best mark in program history.
In addition to Cato, Ni was the other athlete to break into the Top 10 in school history when she registered the eighth-best mark in the school record books with a total of 297.65 in the three-meter dive. Ni also won the one-meter dive scoring at 249.60.
Hurst swept the freestyle sprints with times of 24.84 and 54.80 in the 50 and 100 freestyle, respectively, while the other dual-event winner on the women’s side was Ford, who posted victorious times of 4:49.67 and 5:22.64 in the 400 individual medley and 500 freestyle, respectively.
Rounding out individual winners on the women’s side were
Brittany Broyer (200 freestyle – 2:05.34), #Lizzie Bourgeois (100 butterfly – 1:00.76), and Katelyn Huhn (100 breaststroke – 1:11.02).
On the men’s side, Steurer, Gauger, and McGowan continued their impressive seasons . McGowan was the only triple-event winner on the day winning the 200 individual medley (2:00.18), the 100 butterfly (53.98), and the 500 freestyle (4:57.72).
Steurer clocked a pair of first-place times in the 200 freestyle and the 100 backstroke timing in at 1:48.90 and 55.47, while Gauger swept the one- and three-meter dives.
Finally, in relay action, both of the 200 freestyle relay teams claimed first-place honors with the women’s team posting the eighth-best time in school history at 1:41.46.
Both teams will be off for 10 days before beginning the Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships at the IU Natatorium Feb. 16-19.
