INDIANAPOLIS – School records continued to fall on the third day of the 2011 Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships as the IUPUI men’s team broke two school records and the women’s team snapped four IUPUI marks while concluding Day 3 of the conference championships in sixth place.

Through 26 events, the men’s team is in sixth place with 178 points, while the women’s team also sits in sixth place with 176.5 points. Oakland is leading both the men’s and women’s meets.

The trio of Tyler McGowan, Elizabeth Bourgeois, and Katelyn Cato set their names atop the IUPUI record books for the second day in a row, while Hunter Chiasson added his name to the new list of record holders.

McGowan broke his own school record in in the preliminaries of the 400 individual medley at 4:05.99, moving him into the second seed entering the ‘A’ final. In the final, McGowan became IUPUI’s second all-conference performer of the meet and first on the men’s side with a third-place showing of 4:04.15, besting his own school record once again.

After setting a new 50 freestyle record a day ago, Bourgeois set her sights on besting her own school record in the 100 butterfly and she did just that with a time of 56.75 in the prelims en route to the second seed in the ‘A’ final. Similar to McGowan, Bourgeois bested her newly set school record in the final with a mark of 56.44, giving her all-conference honors with a third-place finish.
In the 200 freestyle preliminaries, Cato broke Lindsay Corn’s school record of 1:56.59 with a time of 1:55.86. Entering the ‘A’ final as the sixth seed, Cato finished fifth with a strong push in the final 100 yards to time in at 1:56.00.

Chiasson claimed the other school record doing so in the prelims of the 100 backstroke. Chiasson and Michael Steurer claimed spots in the ‘B’ final with times of 52.67 and 52.77, respectively.

Chiasson’s mark of 52.67 set a new school record, while Steurer reach a new personal best and registered the third-best time in program history. Late in the consolation final, Chiasson and Steurer clocked in at 52.96 and 53.35, placing 12th and 15th.

In other events, Carrie Ford and Amanda Janda each moved into the ‘B’ finals of the 400 IM and in the consolation final, Ford placed second in the heat and 10th overall, timing in at 4:46.35, while Janda recorded a 13th-place time of 4:51.29. The duo combined to score 11 points for the Jaguars.

Luke Green reached the ‘B’ final of the 200 freestyle clocking in at 1:45.83, the 10th-best mark in school history, before bettering his time in the final with a third-place showing in the heat and an 11th-place finish overall with time of 1:45.19, moving him up to third in the school record books.

In the ‘B’ final of the 100 breaststroke, Kyle Whitaker won the consolation final with a time of 59.24, the third-fastest mark in school history.

In the final event of the night, Cato swam the opening leg of the women’s 400 medley relay and her 100 backstroke time of 58.92 broke the school-record time of 59.41 set by Kate Stephens on Feb. 22, 2008.

Tori Taylor, Bourgeois, and Hurst followed and the group went on to set the new school record en route to a fifth-place finish, timing in at 3:57.36. The time set forth by the trio marked the first sub-four minute time in the 400 medley relay in IUPUI history besting the previous record by nearly seven seconds.
The men’s 3-meter dive was concluded during the brief break prior to the 400 medley relays, but during the break Mitchell Gauger added valuable points to the Jags score and earned all-conference honors finishing third.
