TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The IUPUI volleyball team hit .269 for the match and held Indiana State to a .163 hitting percentage helping the Jaguars open their final week of regular-season play with an impressive 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-19) win over the Sycamores Tuesday evening.
Moriah Fair led the Jags with 12 kills, but
Alexis Meeks tied a career high with six kills and added 30 assists and 11 digs while leading a balanced offensive attack.
“It was good to come out and take control of the match from start to finish,” said head coach
Steve Payne. “We did a good job to stop their runs and we stepped it up when to needed to and finished strong.”
Defensively,
Shari Bernhardt tallied a match-high 25 digs moving her season total to 633. Her new total becomes IUPUI’s single-season record, surpassing Erin Jones’ total of 612 set in 2005.
Bethany Fogler entered the night as IUPUI’s single-season record holder in total blocks and block assists, and her one solo block in addition to her three block assists gave her the school’s single-season solo blocks record with 21.
Six ties occurred early in set one until kills by the trio of
Kalyse Reimbold, Fair and
Kelsey Hoefer, combined with a Bernhardt ace helped the Jags open a 15-11 lead. After the IUPUI lead was cut to three points, 16-13, Fogler set IUPUI’s single-season record with her 21st solo block of the year and followed that by teaming up with Meeks for another block before putting a kill to the floor pushing the lead back to six points, 19-13. Another Fogler kill made the score 24-14, but Indiana State used a five-point spurt to close within five before a Reimbold kill closed out the 25-19 opening-set win.
Strong play continued for IUPUI in set two as a pair of kills by Hoefer coupled with kills from Fair and
Kortni Wright elevated its lead to 6-2 forcing the Sycamores to burn an early timeout. Despite the timeout, the Jaguars continued to keep the pressure on and extended the lead to 11-3, resulting in Indiana State using its final timeout. ISU slowly fought back and crawled with three points on three occasions, but a block by Hoefer and Fogler and a Sycamores service error helped IUPUI take a 25-20 win and enter the 10-minute break up two sets to none.
Set three saw the lead change several times early and later saw ISU take a 16-13 lead. A quick four-point spurt placed the Jags back on top 17-16, before three more ties ensued with the last at 19-19. A Fogler kill kick started a game-ending six-point surge that handed the Jaguars the 25-19 win.
The win moved IUPUI’s overall record to 15-14, while Indiana State fell to 13-14.
IUPUI rounds out its regular season this weekend when it heads to Oakland and IPFW for a pair of Summit League matches on Friday, Nov. 11 and Saturday, Nov. 12, respectively. Both matches are set to begin at 7 p.m.
