MACOMB, Ill. - Freshman midfielder
Taylor Heidorn notched her first career multi-goal game and senior
Alicia Brock tallied the game-winner as IUPUI rolled to a 3-1 win at Western Illinois on Saturday afternoon.
Heidorn got the Jaguars off to a strong start, tallying the game's first goal less than five minutes in. The rookie created some space in front of the net before driving a shot past WIU (7-10, 1-6 Summit) goalkeeper Victoria Kappel for an early 1-0 lead.
IUPUI (3-10-4, 2-4-1 Summit) took the 1-0 advantage to intermission, but wasted little time in playing add-on in the second half. Just 52 seconds in, Brock slid a shot past Kappel for her fourth goal of the year. Classmate
Megan Hock initiated the score by rolling a cross through the WIU 18-yard box for her first assist of the season.
Western cut the lead in half in the 78th minute, breaking up
Giselle Guzman's shutout bid when Kayse Flostrand scored on a header, setup by Kristin Becker's corner kick.
However, Heidorn buried the Fighting Leathernecks with just more than a minute to play when she scored on a rebound for her fifth goal of the season. She's now tied with Hock for the team-high in goals and took over the team lead in points with 12.
"Overall, a fantastic effort by on part of a lot of kids out there. It was a good win for us," IUPUI Head Coach
Chris Johnson said. "The big one was Gigi. She came up huge on a couple of different occasions. She was punching balls out and jumping in the air and knocking balls out of there.
"She definitely kept us in the game long enough to give our offense some time to make some plays."
Guzman made a career-high 11 saves and faced 36 total shots. IUPUI attempted 16 shots, led by Heidorn's six tries. Katie Condon led WIU with six shot attempts although nine different Leathernecks tried at least two attempts.
The win was IUPUI's second-in-a-row, both of which have come on the road. The Jaguars had previously dropped 12 of 13 road matches before the win at Southern Utah.
IUPUI will return home for a two-game homestand, beginning against IPFW on Friday, Oct. 28 at 7:00 p.m.. That match will now be played at Carmel High School.
