INDIANAPOLIS - The offensive struggles continued for the IUPUI volleyball team, as the Jaguars fell to IPFW, 3-1, Saturday night at The Jungle. The Jags hit just .095 for the match, falling 25-21, 20-25, 10-25, 14-25, as IPFW hit .205.
IUPUI (2-11, 1-3 Summit) changed up their starting lineup before the match, inserting
Bethany Fogler into the lineup. The Fort Wayne, Ind.-native paid dividends throughout the evening, leading the Jaguars with 12 kills and hitting .286.
IPFW (6-7, 2-1 Summit) was led by Stephanie Lambert and Mayara Schlindwein, who had 13 and 12 kills, respectively.
A night after struggling to get going in the beginning of sets, the Jaguars got off on the right foot to open the match, picking up the first set with a stingy defense and opportunistic offense. IUPUI came out with aggression from the first service, dominating at the net and opening an 8-3 lead.
Though IPFW responded with a 5-0 run to knot the set early, the Jags' controlled the net, as Fogler added a presence at the net, picking up 5 kills and altering the Mastodon attack throughout the set.
Down 9-8, IUPUI went on a 5-0 run of their own, building a four-point lead after two kills from
Kalyse Reimbold and another from
Dana Gardner. IUPUI would not trail the remainder of the set.Â
Though the Mastodons applied pressure, the Jaguars' defense stood tall, as 29 digs prevented IPFW from coming back late in the set, holding IPFW to a .059 hitting percentage in the set.
It looked like more of the same early in the second set, as IUPUI again opened an early four-point lead, only to see it slip away during a 9-1 Mastodon run. Â
Armed with a 13-9 advantage, IPFW continued to build upon their lead, opening an eight-point bulge at 20-12 before the Jaguars rallied with a 4-0 run to cut their deficit in half. Fogler and Gardner sandwiched kills around Mastodon errors before an IPFW sideout blunted the momentum.
Undaunted, IUPUI closed to 21-19 after a Weber kill, but the Mastodons regained the serve and closed out the set, 25-20.  Â
In the pivotal third set, it was IPFW who carried over the momentum from the end of the second set, opening a quick 7-3 lead and forcing Steve Payne into the early timeout. Unfortunately for the Jaguars, the timeout did little to blunt the Mastodons' roll, as the run extended into a 14-5 IPFW advantage.
Four blocks in the set fueled a Mastodon defense that held IUPUI at bay throughout the set. By the time the set was over, IPFW led by 15, cruising to the 25-10 win and moving a set away from victory.
After the teams traded points to open the set, it was a 5-1 Mastodon run that gave the 'Dons breathing room in the fourth. Momentum squarely on their side, IPFW cruised once again, wrapping up the match with a 25-14 victory.
IUPUI will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 21, when they head to the Butler-Tarkington neighborhood for a meeting with Butler. The match will begin at 7 p.m..
