IUPUI - Bowling Green Box Score
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- In her first weekend playing collegiate volleyball,
Brittany Anglemyer earned MSU Showcase All-Tournament Team honors. Unfortunately, her IUPUI volleyball team went 0-2 on Saturday, dropping back-to-back 3-0 decisions to Michigan State and Bowling Green at Jenison Field House.
IUPUI (0-3) was led by
Kalyse Reimbold's 15 kills against Michigan State; while the Jaguars totaled nine blocks in the match, Michigan State (3-0) managed to hit .297 for the match, tallying 46 kills in the three sets, downing the Jaguars, 25-20, 25-14, 25-19.
A 4-0 Spartan run midway through the first set put the Jags behind, 13-9, forcing head coach
Steve Payne into an early timeout. Three points on the service of
Lauran Thompson helped IUPUI close within 19-16, but Michigan State was too much down the stretch, opening a six-point lead en route to the 25-20 win.
In the second set, again it was a Spartan spurt midway through the set that put MSU on the path to victory. Michigan State opened an eight-point lead on the way to the 25-14 win.
Down two sets to none, the Jaguars were tied with the Spartans at 15 apiece following a
Dana Gardner block. However, three straight Michigan State points put the Big Ten school ahead and forced IUPUI into a timeout. A
Bethany Fogler kill brought the Jags back within three, but Michigan State pulled away late for the sweep.
Bowling Green used a similar offensive attack to put down IUPUI in the third match, hitting .283 to the Jaguars' .120.
Lindsey Weber led the Jags with nine kills, while Anglemyer hit .417 in 12 attempts.
For the tournament, Anglemyer led IUPUI with a .344 hitting percentage; the freshman posted 14 kills and 10 total blocks in the three sets.
In the opening set versus the Falcons, IUPUI took a 15-12 lead after an
Alexis Meeks ace and a kill from Gardner, leading to a BGSU timeout. Bowling Green came out of the break by scoring six of the next seven points, forcing IUPUI into a one-minute break.
After a second timeout with Bowling Green ahead, 23-18, the Jaguars closed to within two after a Weber ace and a block by Anglemyer and Meeks. The Falcons regrouped with their second timeout, however, and recorded two points to take the opening set, 25-23.
With the momentum from the first set, the Falcons jumped on IUPUI early in the second set, racing out to a 9-4 lead. After building a nine-point advantage, it was Bowling Green who was forced into a timeout when the Jaguars responded with a 4-2 run to close within 18-12.
Three kills from Reimbold spurred IUPUI on the run, but Bowling Green would close on a 7-3 spurt, winning the second set, 25-15.
The third set was a near replica of the first, with the Jaguars forcing Bowling Green into a timeout with IUPUI ahead, 14-13. Back-to-back kills from
Jessica Phelps and Weber gave IUPUI the lead, but Bowling Green regrouped during the timeout, using three straight points to assume a 19-17 advantage.
Still, the Jaguars refused to go quietly, as a
Shari Bernhardt ace brought IUPUI to their first set point of the tournament; however, the Falcons used consecutive kills to bring about match point. Though a Weber kill staved off the first match point, Bowling Green recorded the last two points and swept the Jaguars, 27-25.
IUPUI will look for their first win of the season when they host Indiana State at 7 p.m. ET on Tuesday, August 31. The match will be available on IUPUI Live! and via live stats.
