INDIANAPOLIS - For the second straight outing, the IUPUI women's soccer team yielded an early score and failed to tally as Ball State ruined the 2010 home opener with a 3-0 win on Friday night.

Ball State's (3-0) Missy Gordon scored the first of her two goals in the opening minute when she flared a shot from over 30 yards out over the head of redshirt freshman Paige Koop and into the awning net.

"We cannot afford to give up goals in the first five minutes of games that are not, what I would consider, legitimate shots," IUPUI Head Coach Chris Johnson said. "The keepers have got to step up and start making some saves.

"We can't expect our backs to stop the opponents from getting off a single shot on goal through the entire match."

Koop and the Jaguars settled down from there and had some solid opportunities for the equalizer throughout the first stanza. In the 17th minute, Kelly Williams set up freshman Sarah Colby on the doorstep, but the freshman's shot attempt was directed right at BSU goalkeeper Aubrey Buehler, who made the stop.

In the 28th minute, junior Megan Hock drove a cross to the right side of the six-yard box where Alicia Brock pushed a contested shot wide of the post. Ball State took control right before halftime when Skylar Chew rolled a pass through the heart of the Jaguars' defense that set up Robyn Miley's goal in the 44th minute.

Gordon capped the scoring in the 50th minute when she beat Koop near post from 10 yards out off a feed from Shaniece Thorpe.

IUPUI (0-2) nearly broke up the shutout in the 77th minute, but Ashley Doreski hit a shot right at the goalkeeper after beating a pair of defenders to set up the scoring chance.

Overall, Ball State outshot IUPUI 13-7 as Gordon led all players with five attempts. Colby and Doreski totaled two shots each.

"I definitely liked the way the kids kept battling at it and created some opportunities in the first half," Johnson said. "In the second half, I thought the midfielders did a good job of bringing the ball through and creating some space."

Including Koop, Johnson had five freshman starters in the lineup on Friday and had two other rookies come off the bench to receive significant action.

"From Illinois State to Eastern Illinois to tonight, we're making progress. I would have liked for there to have been some better results thus far, but we're making strides and improving everyday," the eighth-year head coach added.

Koop made two saves in her first collegiate start while Buehler and Layne Schramm combined for two stops in net for the Cardinals. Ball State improved to 4-1-1 all-time against the Jaguars with the win.

IUPUI will return to action on Sunday when it treks up I-69 to play Detroit in a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
