YPSILANTI, Mich. – Competing for the final time before heading home for winter break, the IUPUI men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams traveled to Ypsilanti, Mich., for the Eastern Michigan Invitational. The men’s squad placed fifth in the event with 221 points, while the women finished 10th with 57 points.
Chen Ni posted the top finishes of the day for the Jaguars in both the one and three-meter dives. Ni secured two third-place showings with scores of 264.25 and 295.65 in the one and three-meter dives, respectively.
Tyler McGowan registered three Top 11 individual finishes and helped the 4x800 freestyle relay quartet to a sixth-place showing. McGowan’s top time came in the 200 butterfly, where he finished with a ninth-place mark of 1:55.32. McGowan’s time in the 200 butterfly was just 0.4 seconds off his school record time set during the 2007-08 season.
McGowan also placed ninth in the 400 individual medley (4:17.41), the 10th-best mark in school history, while adding an 11th-place showing in the 500 freestyle (4:48.70).
One of the other highlights for the women’s team was #Katelyn Cato’s# swim in the 200 backstroke. Cato touched the wall in 2:10.84 moving her into fifth place in the record books.

Kyle Whitaker chipped in Top 13 finishes as Steurer placed 10th in the 100 backstroke (54.25), before finishing 13th in the 200 backstoke (1:57.10), while Whitaker clocked in at 2:15.83 in the 200 breaststroke.
Both the men’s and women’s teams have a month off before returning to competition Jan. 7-8 at the University of Indianapolis Invitational.
