ROCHESTER, Mich. - Despite Kalyse Reimbold's 15 kills, the IUPUI volleyball team fell to Summit League rival Oakland in straight sets (25-23, 25-16, 25-23) on Friday evening.
Reimbold's 15 kills ties her season high for a three-set match. It is the third time she has recorded 15 kills in a three set match with the other two coming against Michigan State and South Dakota State.
In the early going of the first set, the Jaguars (7-21, 6-10 Summit League) trailed 5-1, but the play of Kalyse Reimbold got the Jaguars back in the set. Reimbold's two kills and an ace knotted the score at six. Later in the set, with IUPUI trailing 19-16, Oakland tightened up its play recording three straight points on an IUPUI attack error and kills from Ashley Nevelle and Audrey Wilson. A Reimbold kill tied the score at 23, but the Grizzlies recorded the final two points on a kill from Meghan Bray and an ace from Allison Bell.
Oakland carried over momentum from the first set and rolled through the Jaguars in the second set. The Grizzlies (15-12, 10-5) jumped out to a 10-4 lead. Reimbold and Dana Gardner tried to lead the Jaguars back with two kills each early in the set, but Oakland cruised through the set. Three straight points gave the Grizzlies a 17-8 lead. The Jaguars put together three straight points to get within six but ended up dropping the second set 25-16.
IUPUI put up a fight in the third set. Consecutive kills by Bray, who had a team-high 14 kills, gave the Grizzlies a 5-1 lead, but the Jaguars were able to tie the set at seven with the help of three Oakland errors.
The Jaguars were able to stay close for the rest of the set. A Nicole Ramey kill got the Jaguars within two at 22-20 and the Jaguars fought off two match points before Jenna Lange's kill ended the match.
Shari Bernhardt's 15 digs were a team high. The Jaguars will close out their road schedule tomorrow against IPFW.
