DELAWARE, Ohio – The IUPUI men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams combined for 21 individual and relay victories at the Ohio Wesleyan Invitational this weekend. The women’s team came away with a second-place finish, while the men finished third.
The women’s team had individual victories by Lizzie Bourgeois,
Katelyn Cato,
Amanda Janda, and
Lindsey Hurst. Bourgeois led all swimmers as a four-time winner at the meet, while Janna collected her first podium.
McGowan bested the field in the 500 freestyle, 200 backstroke, and 200 butterfly, showing off his versatility. McGowan’s times in the events were 4:52.30 in the 500 freestyle, 1:59.20 in the 200 backstroke, and 2:00.08 in the 200 butterfly.
The other triple winner on the men’s side was Whitaker, who was victorious with times of 57.39 in the 100 butterfly, 1:02.93 in the 100 breaststroke, and 2:15.74 in the 200 breaststroke.
Finally, Steurer touched the wall first in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke with times of 2:00.49 and 53.81, respectively, while placing second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 49.23.
The other victory on the men’s side came in the 400 freestyle relay with a mark of 3:20.73.
Bourgeois’ four individual victories came in the 100 freestyle (55.76), the 100 butterfly (1:00.15), the 100 backstroke (1:03.99), and the 200 butterfly (2:13.68). In addition to the four personal wins, Bourgeois helped the 200 freestyle relay, the 400 medley relay, and the 400 freestyle relay teams each capture first-place honors.
Joining Bourgeois on two of the three relay teams was Cato, who placed first individually in the 500 freestyle (5:22.96), the 200 backstroke (2:13.07), and the 200 freestyle (1:59.54).
Hurst and Janda each claimed their victories in the 50 freestyle and the 200 individual medley, respectively.
The other two members of the 400 freestyle relay alongside Bourgeois and Cato were Karen Balko and Rosanna Van Der Kleij, and the group’s first-place time of 3:45.82 was the 14th-best time in school history.
Both teams will have next weekend off from competition before returning to the pool Dec. 3-4 at the Eastern Michigan Invitational.
