INDIANAPOLIS – Following three weeks away from the pool, the IUPUI men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams returned to action this weekend and each placed third in the two-day House of Champions meet hosted at the IUPUI Natatorium.

Chen Ni and Mitchell Gauger each swept the one- and three-meter diving events to pace the Jaguars. Ni’s wins resulted in two of the three individual event wins for the women’s team, while Gauger accounted for both of the individual men’s titles. Ni’s three-meter dive score of 315.45 broke her own school record in the event and qualified her for the Zone Championships.

Ni and Gauger paced their respective teams to overall scores of 519 and 506.5, respectively. Ball State captured both the men’s and women’s titles with scores of 770 and 899. Xavier’s men’s and women’s teams both placed second followed by IUPUI.

The other women’s individual title came from Lizzie Bourgeois, who in addition to her individual triumph, helped pick up three Top 4 finishes in relays and added two more Top 4 finishes in other individual events.

Bourgeois defeated the field in the 100 fly with a time of 58.37, marking the fifth-fastest time in school history. She then placed second in the 200 fly with the 13th-best time in program history (2:11.68) and finished fourth in the 50 freestyle clocking in at 24.61.

As part of the relays, Bourgeois helped the 200 freestyle relay quartet place fourth with a time of 1:39.53, catapulting the group into the third place in school history. Finally, Bourgeois aided the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay to a pair of fourth-place showings.

Katelyn Cato, who also was on the 200 freestyle relay team, moved her way onto the record books in the 500 freestyle and the 200 backstroke. Cato’s eighth-place time of 5:18.69 in the 500 freestyle moved her into sixth on that chart, while her fourth-place mark of 2:11.53 in the 200 backstroke put her 10th in school history on that list.

Outside of Gauger’s two wins in the one- and three-meter dives, which he won by a combined 4.35 points, Tyler McGowan posted a trio of second-place showings. Each of McGowan’s times moved him up the Top 15 rankings in program history. His time of 4:46.07 in the 500 freestyle is eighth in IUPUI history, his time of 4:15.36 in the 400 individual medley is fifth all time, and his 200 butterfly time of 1:57.23 moved him to 13th all-time.

Michael Steurer added to the second-place marks with a time of 1:56.70 in the 200 backstroke, while tacking on a third-place time of 54.28 in the 100 backstroke.

Sara Decker moved into the Top 5 in program history in both the 500 freestyle and 1,650 freestyle with times of 5:18.06 and 18:30.81, respectively, moving her into fourth and fifth place on those respective charts.

The last of the Top 3 individual finishes came from Katlyn Huhn, who placed third in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:09.81.

Both teams are back in action Nov. 20-21 at the Ohio Wesleyan Invitational.
