INDIANAPOLIS -- The IUPUI women's basketball team put an emphatic end to their nine-game losing streak, holding Centenary to 21.7-percent shooting for the game, helping the Jaguars cruise to a 61-35 win at The Jungle on "Jaguars' Blue Saturday." The win was the 200th for IUPUI head coach
Shann Hart and 73rd at IUPUI, moving her into a tie for third place all time with the Jaguars.
IUPUI (2-15, 1-5 Summit) forced 18 first-half turnovers from Centenary (1-17, 0-7 Summit) and held the Ladies to 3-of-22 shooting in the opening half. All three of the Ladies' field goals were three-pointers, as the Jaguars restricted the paint. Centenary's first two-point field goal came at the 18:09 mark of the second half, a 21:51 span.
"We wanted to key on their post players", Hart said after the game. "Farrell has been an all-conference player before, and she's tough to stop when she gets going and I think we kept her from doing that tonight."
Both
Janna Eichelberger and
Kerah Nelson tallied double-doubles in leading the Jaguars to victory, helping IUPUI outscore Centenary, 30-10, in the paint. For Eichelberger, her 11-point, 10-rebound effort was her first career double-double, while Nelson's 17-point, 10-rebound output was her second double-double of her freshman season.
The dual double-doubles marked the first time since Feb. 21, 2009, that IUPUI had two double-doubles in the same game;
Julia Whitted and
Jernisha Cann pulled the feat for the Jaguars that night.
Eichelberger got the Jaguars rolling at the start, drilling a three in the corner to put the Jags up early; after two Centenary buckets, IUPUI put their press into effect, changing the complexion of the game.
The Jags forced turnovers on four of the Ladies' next five possessions, turning a 6-5 deficit into a 15-7 lead after a
Jessica Huffman layup. The run would continue, as the IUPUI defense held Centenary without a field goal over a 9:59 stretch, at which point the Jaguars led, 34-9.
Eichelberger capped the half with a jumper from the baseline at the horn, as IUPUI took a 38-14 lead into the break.
While Eichelberger had 9 points in the first half, it was Nelson's turn to control play in the final 20 minutes, scoring 11 points and grabbing five boards to claim the double-double.
While the Jaguars shot just 33.3 percent in the second half, they held Centenary to 7-of-24 shooting, allowing them to cruise to Hart's milestone win.
"It's a nice personal honor," Hart said of the win. "But I'm more concerned with taking our effort and intensity tonight into Monday's game. We'll be meeting one of the top teams in our conference, and we're going to need to carry over this effort."
IUPUI will host Oral Roberts on Monday, Jan. 18, in a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day matinee. Tip-off from The Jungle is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET, and the women's basketball team will be hosting a youth clinic following the game. All children attending the clinic will be admitted to the game for free.
