Box Score
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Tied at a set apiece and two points away from defeat in the third set, the IUPUI volleyball team refused to buckle, taking the last three points of the set and rolling to a 3-1 win over Indiana State Tuesday night at ISU Arena.
Kalyse Reimbold posted 23 kills in the 25-22, 20-25, 25-23, 25-21 victory.
IUPUI (11-4) revived an offense that struggled over the weekend, hitting .253 for the match. Reimbold led the way for the Jags, posting a .417 attack percentage, while
Monica Suding tallied 13 kills and a .345 hitting percentage.
Lindsey Weber was the third Jaguar to go over 10 kills for the night, finishing with 11.
It was the third set that freed IUPUI to take the match; in a back and forth set, the Jaguars were seemingly in control, leading 22-19 after an Indiana State (5-11) service error. However, four straight Sycamores points put ISU in a commanding 23-22 position.
After a timeout, the Jaguars fed Reimbold to tie the set; two Indiana State attack errors closed the set and gave IUPUI a commanding 2-1 lead.
Early in the opening set, it looked like the Jags might run away with the set, as a Reimbold kill and a Suding ace spurred an early 4-0 run that gave IUPUI an 8-4 advantage; Indiana State would not take the lead the remainder of the set.
After ISU closed to 11-10, the Jaguars reeled off three straight points, getting kills from Suding and
Danielle Goodnight to fuel the run. The Sycamores would take another timeout to try and slow the run, but IUPUI was able to hold off Indiana State for the remainder of the set, taking a 1-0 lead on the road.
It was the Sycamores who jumped out to a quick start in the second set, reversing course by taking an 8-4 lead over the Jaguars early on. A
Shari Bernhardt ace brought IUPUI within two points, but ISU pushed their lead back to four before Goodnight fed Weber, Reimbold and Suding on consecutive points to close the Jags' deficit to one at 11-10.
Reimbold helped tie the set with consecutive sideouts - first with a solo block and then with a kill - but Indiana State answered each time, refusing to yield the lead to IUPUI. A a kill by
Jessica Phelps made it a 14-13 game in favor of the Sycamores, ISU went on a 3-0 run to stretch their lead back to four at 17-13.
The Jaguars would get no further than three points the rest of the way as Indiana State tied the match at a set apiece.
Leading 9-7 in the fourth set, the Jaguars used the services of Bernhardt and
Nicole Ramey to wrest control of the match. Back-to-back kills from Suding pushed IUPUI's lead to 11-7, and two Ramey aces helped the Jaguars open a 15-8 advantage, forcing ISU into a timeout.
The Sycamores closed within three points on one occasion midway through the set, but the Jags went back to the hot hand, getting a kill from Reimbold to stop ISU's momentum. Kills from Weber and Goodnight helped create a set point chance for the Jaguars, and, appropriately enough, it was Reimbold who closed the match with her 23rd kill of the evening.
