INDIANAPOLIS -- The IUPUI volleyball team will look to leave a midweek loss in their wake on Friday and Saturday, when they wrap up their eight-match homestand with contests against UMKC and Southern Utah. Both matches will start at 7 p.m. from The Jungle.
IUPUI (8-2, 1-0 Summit) won their Summit League opener in convincing fashion last Saturday, blitzing Western Illinois, 3-0, before dropping a non-conference match to Ball State on Tuesday.
The Jaguars, who lead their Summit League counterparts on kills (13.30 per set), assists (12.15 per set) and digs (17.82 per set), will look to pick up victories over UMKC (4-7, 0-2 Summit) and Southern Utah (3-7, 1-1 Summit).
For IUPUI,
Kalyse Reimbold and
Monica Suding lead the way offensively, with
Danielle Goodnight excelling in her third year as the Jaguars' setter. Goodnight is second in The Summit in assists, while Suding ranks fourth in the conference with a .298 hitting percentage. Reimbold is sixth with 3.29 kills per set.
Defensively,
Rachel Holmes and
Shari Bernhardt pace the Jags. Holmes, The Summit League Defensive Player of the Week, is averaging 3.91 digs per set, while Bernhardt is third in the conference with 4.45 digs per set.
UMKC has dropped their opening two conference matches; however, the Kangaroos are at the top of several Summit League statistical categories. The 'Roos lead The Summit in blocks with 90, 20 more than second place South Dakota State, and average 2.25 per set. Meanwhile, the Kangaroos are first in the league in overall digs with 675, but second to IUPUI in digs per set with a 16.88 average.
Last year, the two teams split their meetings, with the Jaguars claiming a 3-1 win in Kansas City and dropping a five-set match in The Jungle.
IUPUI has never played Southern Utah, as the Thunderbirds are participating in volleyball for the first time since 1989. Playing their first Summit League matches last weekend, Southern Utah went 1-1, defeating IPFW, 3-1, and falling to Oakland, 3-2.
Against Oakland, Analaine Pelaez picked up a season-high 24 kills and is leading the Thunderbird attack with a team-high 154 kills this season.
The Thunderbirds' eastern swing to IUPUI and Western Illinois marks their first Summit League road trip.
