INDIANAPOLIS -- IUPUI senior Danielle Goodnight became the school's all-time assists leader with 35 assists in the Jaguars' 3-0 win over IPFW on Professor Appreciation Night at The Jungle.  With 3,817 helpers, the Martinsville, Ind.-native surpassed former Jaguar standout Tanna Smith for the record.

With the victory, the Jaguars matched the school's Division I record for wins in a season, equaling the efforts of the 2000 IUPUI volleyball squad; that team won the program's only regular season conference title in going 18-14.

"We played really well tonight," IUPUI head coach Steve Payne said following the match.  "We made some adjustments to take away their attack and really moved well defensively."

IUPUI (18-9, 10-6 Summit) controlled the match from the midway point of the first set, as Payne took a timeout to rally the team after falling behind, 11-7.  To that point, IPFW (16-10, 9-6 Summit) had 8 kills and no errors in the set. 

The Jaguars reeled off a 9-1 run after the 75-second break, forcing the Mastodons to burn through both of their timeouts by the time the run was complete.  IPFW would draw within three point on several occasions, but the Jags had an answer each time, as Kalyse Reimbold picked up two key kills to hold off the 'Dons.  Her fifth kill of the set closed the set, giving IUPUI the 25-19 win.

Totaling 18 digs in the opening set, the Jaguars stepped up their back row rotation in the middle set, coming up with 23 digs to thwart IPFW's efforts to knot the match at a set apiece.  IUPUI never trailed in the set, taking an early 7-4 lead to force the Mastodons into an early timeout. 

Though the teams traded points, IPFW came no closer than two points (7-5), as the Jaguars slowly pulled away, taking an 18-13 lead on a block from Reimbold and Ashely Johnson.  With momentum squarely on their side, the Jaguars pulled away, getting two kills apiece from Reimbold and Rachel Holmes to put the Mastodons away.

After recognizing their professors between sets two and three, the Jags set out to make sure a repeat of their match at IPFW did not ensue.  In that match, it IUPUI who trailed by two sets on the road and rallied to force a fifth set, but this time around, the Jaguars dug deep to make sure the shoe would not be on the other foot.

This time it was the Mastodons who got out to a quick start, opening a brief 2-0 lead before the Jaguars came right back to knot the set.  A Holmes' kill retied the set at 6 and after two straight attack errors - the latter on a block by Johnson and Rachel Holmes - IUPUI had forced IPFW into a timeout.

IPFW would rally however, knotting the set at 10 after two Jaguar errors; still IUPUI remained undaunted, taking the next four points.  Johnson got the ball rolling with a kill off a Goodnight feed, and the Martinsville H.S.-product fed Weber on the next two points to help the Jags open a 14-10 lead.

IUPUI's advantage grew to six, 18-12, before IPFW put pressure on the Jaguars once again, closing to within two points and prompting Payne to take a timeout.  This time, Goodnight fed Reimbold to give the Jags a key sideout - the assists also tied Burns' school record of 3,814 assists. 

With IUPUI holding a 20-16 lead, Goodnight set the record, feeding Johnson on a slide to break her cousin's mark.  Goodnight closed the night by setting Reimbold for one more kill, this one to close the set, 25-20, and give the Jags the sweep of IPFW.

"I'm really proud of Danielle," Payne said.  "She's been a big reason why we have been successful over these last few years."

Reimbold finished the night with 16 kills and 14 digs for IUPUI, while Weber had 9 kills.  Shari Bernhardt led all players with 16 digs, while Holmes added 14 to go along with 7 kills.  Goodnight joined Reimbold in the double-double club with 11 digs to go with her 35 assists.

The Jaguars will celebrate Senior Night tomorrow night, Saturday, Nov. 7, prior to their match against Oakland University.  Danielle Goodnight, Rachel Holmes, Hillary Houston, Ashley Johnson and Monica Suding will all be honored before the match, which starts at 7 p.m..  Live stats and streaming video will be available for the contest as well.
