MACOMB, Ill. -- The IUPUI volleyball team will wrap up their record-setting regular season on Saturday night at 8 p.m. when they meet Western Illinois. A victory would clinch no worse than a tie for second place in The Summit League and give the Jaguars an even 20 wins on the season.
IUPUI (19-9, 11-6 Summit) swept through the two teams directly behind them in the conference standings last week - Oakland and IPFW - to leapfrog from fourth to second place. Both the Grizzlies and Mastodons host UMKC and Southern Utah this weekend.
Should the Jaguars emerge victorious on Saturday, any loss by IPFW this weekend would clinch the No. 2 seed for the Jags; Oakland cannot finish ahead of IUPUI if the Jaguars win at Western Illinois (10-20, 5-12 Summit).
The Jaguars broke three school records last week, the first coming when
Danielle Goodnight became IUPUI's all-time assists leader on Friday night. On Saturday, the Jags set a new school record for wins in a season with their 19th, while
Ashley Johnson set the single-season solo blocks record with her 19th.
A win at Western Illinois would give the Jaguars their highest conference wins total since 2000, when IUPUI claimed The Summit League regular season title with a 13-3 mark. The Fighting Leathernecks will be hosting their senior night ceremonies on Saturday and will be trying to snap a two-match conference losing streak.
IUPUI and Western Illinois opened their 2009 Summit League season against each other on Nov. 14, with the Jaguars coming away with a 3-0 sweep of the Leathernecks.
