SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Notre Dame forward Melissa Henderson scored a pair of goals as the No. 5 Fighting Irish ended the IUPUI women's soccer team's fairytale season, 5-0 at Alumni Stadium in the opening round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament. IUPUI capped the campaign with a school record 17 wins against just five losses in the program's first-ever postseason appearance.

Henderson put the hosts on the scoreboard just over seven minutes in when she carried the ball through the teeth of the Jaguars' defense before blazing a left-footed shot in front of IUPUI goalkeeper Jamie Farrell for the game-winner.

After the initial score, IUPUI held steady until two goals late in the first half put the game out of reach.

Haley Ford made it 2-0 in the 40th minute when she collected a rebound of a Farrell save and rolled a shot inside the left post. Rachel Vandergenugten made it 3-0 in the 44th minute on a goal from point blank range, set up off assists from Ford and Molly Campbell.

"We were looking for our kids to come out and compete in the game and we did that," IUPUI Head Coach Chris Johnson said. "I would have liked to have gone into halftime only down one or two, but we let it get away a little.

"We had some chances to put some balls on goal in the first half, but we came out kind of in awe of everything and got off to a little bit of a slow start."

IUPUI came out aggressive in the second half, getting quality chances from senior defender Stephanie Hoffman, including a header off a corner kick that ND goalkeeper Nikki Weiss made a fantastic save on. Later, sophomore Alex Baer hit a drive from 25 yards out that went right at Weiss, who made her final of three saves before giving way to Kelsey Lysander for the final 25 minutes.

Henderson added insurance in the 54th minute with a chip shot from 10 yards out and Ellen Jantsch capped the game's scoring in the 86th.

Farrell made eight saves including a couple of the highlight variety in her final collegiate match and was also aided by a team save in the process.

"They came out and played hard in what was potentially their last games," Johnson said of his senior class. "I thought Kat (McCrory) and Leslie Walker went out and battled hard in the midfield against national pool players.

"Our kids came out and competed and played like we wanted them to compete in a national tournament event. That's all we can ask for. It didn't go our way in terms of the scoreboard, but I thought we represented IUPUI well."

IUPUI closed the 2009 with a school record 17 wins including winning 12 straight at one point. The Jaguars lose six seniors for this year's team including four starters.
